Just about every db we get gets worse each year. LS needs to retire and I would also like a new DC.

I still have faith in Chavis but our DB play has been less than stellar during Fulmer's entire tenure.

I have to be honest I really don't like Chavis. He just can't get it done in clutch situations. He knew on there last scoring drive they were going to run the ball. What the heck was that he was screaming out on the field telling the D that the RB was going over the top right where their OC could see and make the adjustment?

I like Chavis, and I'm lukewarm on Slade. But I'm not convinced what we saw is all about the coaching.

But it doesn't help that Antwan Stewart played like he showed up on the field in his house shoes and bath robe. You can't coach effort and I thought he just played lax.

D-Mo and Hefney at least messed up trying to make big plays, and Wade seemed to me to play pretty well.

Slade maybe, but not Chavis. I understand that our defense has been average this year, but what did you expect? Look at who we lost and look at who was playing. We had some young players on defense this year. It's not an excuse, it's just a fact.

Now maybe they'll all take the next big step by the time next season rolls around and maybe they won't, that remains to be seen. However, I'd hold off on the fire Chavis talk until we see how it all plays out. For the most part, Chavis has been a VERY SOLID DC for the Vols and I think that our defense is going to be tough next year.

I haven't been real excited by the defense we have played this year, but the fact remains that the defense gave up 13 points yesterday. That should have been enough.

on the surface i agree with you...from a scoring standpoint, it should have been.

but they couldn't get off the feild when they had to. allowed too many 3rd and long conversions and the pass defense, against that offense should have been better.

and when push came to shove, we got pushed around.

Our defensive line HAS to improve drastically next year. That has been the major problem this year. If they can't get pressure on the QB, someone is going to eventually get open in the secondary. Not to mention the secondary has to worry about the run more than they should.

I guarantee you that if our line could've gotten any pressure on Penn State's QB, our secondary would have had a couple of picks..

D line has to step up next year.

It's kind of a chicken and egg argument though. Is it the defense's fault for not getting off the field or the offense's fault for not staying on?

fair enough. the offense didn't help, that's for sure.

but what got me more than anything was in the 1st half, how many times PSU hit a big pass play....

but i look at the 94 yard drive PSU had in the 1st half as a prime example of what i'm talking about. even in a game where the offense wasn't doing much, we had chances to flip feild position and couldn't do it.

I guess throughout the whole game i was one that kept thinking if we can just get the ball back, at some point our offense will make plays that will make the difference. We had all season long, so for 50 minutes i had no reason to think otherwise.

but with each punt in the 2nd half, i knew we were putting a tired defense back on the feild, so your point is valid. Neither squad helped the other out.

Our D-line was the downfall of the defense this year, and I don't place the blame on position coaching. Chavis and Brooks have done an outstanding job with the d-line over the year. Unfortunately we just didn't have the horses this year... which puts recruiting somewhat at fault - however, early NFL defections and season ending injuries played the larger part.

With a strong d-line, PSU would have really struggled - we could have slowed down the run and put some pressure on their QB.

PSU coaches did an outstanding job of exploiting our weaknesses.

We haven't been able to stop anyone all year on third down plays, don't know why it would have been any different yesterday. Go back and watch the Florida and LSU games.

If D-Mo were competent enough to play the position for which he was recruited, Stewart would be playing safety, the position he spent the last two years training for. Don't question his effort, that makes you look like a fool. He wasn't as fast as Derrick Williams, who you might recall was the nation's top recruit 2 years ago because of his amazing speed. Antwan had a serious knee injury and switched to safety because he lost some speed. What's D-Mo's excuse for playing safety?

I don't question any of the players for where they are playing. The reason being that they are there because they love the game and the team. My only question to why they are where they are in reference to their ability is why have we not improved and played more players in the positions. When a running back is not getting it done, there is another to take his place, exp. Hardesty for Coker. In the defensive backfield, We don't change because we are incompetent in our coaching these players. I forsee the future as bleek if we don't make some changes in the defensive backfield. (Coaches not Players)

Our defense gave up 13 points yesterday, and 3 of those came off of a turnover. Stewart got beat twice on the touchdown drive, but aside from that, it was not a bad effort.

We did not lose that game on the defensive side of the ball.

Not trying to start anything but I will pose this question again....How many remember people being fed up with Cut before he left for Ole Miss?

D-LINE HAS BEEN OUR WEAK LINK ALL YEAR!

IMO, Cutcliffe is an amazing QB Coach, a so-so Offensive Coordinator, and I don't want him as the head coach in Knoxville. NEVER.

This year's defense compared to last year's defense only gave up 25 yds more total offense per game. Not a bad drop off on paper, but when you dig deeper:

Rushing Defense went from 82 ypg to 143 ypg
Passing Defense went from 216 ypg to 180 ypg

That big swap in yards then allowed teams to just run and run, running the clock down and tire our defense out. The passing yds dropped off, imho, because teams didn't have to pass as much anymore to get first downs. As said before, we need to get the D-Line shored up to stop the run and get some pressure on the QB, and I think everything else will fall in place.

I think it's way past due for Slade to be gone..
It wouldn't hurt my feelings if Chavis or Phil left

Maybe.Cutcliffe compared to nothing but a downward direction,(is what we had prior to his arrival here),is alot better than where we were at though.
