Goodbye Oregon Football

After Tressel, Penmanchip Kelly and the sh!t-storm that's inevitably going to hit Auburn, the NCAA better start taking care of bidness or the boys in D.C. are gonna come calling.

I can buy this.

Ducks football is going to get torched. USC lost 30 schollies over three years and a two year post season ban. What are peoples wagers on the Ducks? I'm guessing 40 schollies for four years and a three year postseason ban.

You guys may be right that the hammer is coming.

I'm not sure that it's as cut and dry as some of you think, though.

It's not against the rules to pay for helpful information from scouts. It's also not against the rules for a scout to give helpful information to athletes.

The area that could be a major violation is receiving help in the recruiting process. Lyles denies steering recruits for any program. The activities that could be seen as helping the recruiting process are "scheduling and driving coaches around to visits." However, if driving coaches around is a violation, wouldn't hiring a taxi during a recruiting trip also be a violation? What if a parent or even some random dude who happens to answer the phone at a recruits house schedules a HS meeting? Is that a violation also?

The rules don't make it very clear when an act goes from an ok service to one that is "part of" the recruiting process beyond what scouts are allowed to do.

Given Kelly's letter, Lyles appearing publicly with staff and recruits multiple times, etc. it suggests that Oregon thought it was working within the rules.

So, your idea is that he was a cheater by day, legit recruiting service by night? That's fanciful.

This is what we like to call denial.

Sounds about right

Whatever it is, it wont be good

Those in Oregon blowing this off is in for a rude awakening

Eventually they will have to take the 1st step towards healing, acceptance, if they want to keep from being out of touch with reality. No way to rationalize this situation.

Sounds good to me, but make the punishment personal. Cut down their most huggable trees and make them wear the same unis every game. Would devastate their team and fan base.

USC got hammered partly because of their refusal to cooperate. Oregon seems to not be screwing around with the NCAA.

I dont see Chip Kelly saying

"I dont know this Willie Lyles that you speak of"

as cooperation

See, the NCAA can use his statements to the Oregonian reporter against him. Plus, all the phone calls that were made to Lyles, even after Kelly said that they had distanced themselves from Lyles, the man he had earlier claimed he did not know.

Plus, the NCAA could never prove that Carroll had anything to do with the payments to Bush

This is direct involvement by the Head Coach. No ifs, ands, or buts. Far worse than what USC did, or OSU, or UT Basketball.

Bama got probation and almost the death penalty because a booster in Memphis paid a handler for a player. Ever heard of Albert Means.

Oregon is toast

Who on Earth has heard of a coach owning up to cheating before it was too late to save his own bacon?

A snowball has a better chance of surviving hell than "Big Balls" Chip Kelly does of being Oregon's coach in twelve months.

Wise man speak wise words.

The Duck fans are trying to convince themselves that this is nothing. That will only make it that much harder when reality comes crashing down on them. My advice to them is to accept the severity of the situation and to learn the phrase, 'Go Beavs!', if they want to cheer for an Oregon team.

My advice to Oregon would be to call Auburn and ask who they know that Phil Knight can pay off.

FYI Charles Robinson of Yahoo said he was working on two stories this summer. One was a 7/8 out of 10 in terms of severity the other was a 10.

This was the 7/8 story.

I'm sure y'all can figure out who the 10 is about ...

I feel like college football is in slavery until a story about Auburn comes out

Do you want to take that bet?

Since I don't have a dog in this hunt, here's some free advice for Oregon..Suspend Kelly for 1 full season or fire him (whichever they prefer), impose scholarship reductions (at least 25 over 3 seasons), and limit off campus recruiting for at least 2 seasons...And then pray another big scandal at another school surfaces or the NCAA decides to focus on OSU and Auburn for a while...JMHO

Has there ever been a self imposed penalty that harsh?
