Atmosphere in TBA

On Basilio's show ("B&B in the midday", or whatever it is called), alot of the conversation today was about the atmosphere, or lack of, in Thompson-Boling arena. They were talking about less people in attendance at the GEC for the Okie St. game being louder than the home crowds at TBA. What are your thoughts on this topic?

Also, some callers were saying that when they try to stand up and cheer that they are told to sit down - even by the ushers (or team green, El Quieta, the Geritol-iban, or whatever you know them by). Has this ever happened to you?

Personally, I haven't been told to sit down by ushers. And my thoughts on the atmosphere at TBA: I think that it's totally inconsistent. The house can be rocking for Florida and Kentucky, but rarely for anyone else, even if the crowd is twice the 8500 or so that attended the Okie St. game in Nashville. There are too many fans that just sit there - I guess they are just there to be seen.

Very very good points. Many of the fans are there for a social function than for a b-ball game, much like it is with football. 10% of the fans make 90% of the noise at the games. I have been told to sit down numerous times at basketball games when I am standing and cheering. I was even told to sit down by Mr. Casey Clausen himself at one game.

part of the trouble is the incredibly high ceiling on thompson bowling the noise can escape well. It was very loud at florida and kentucky but not so much at others. The GEC is more compact and with a lower ceiling so it traps the noise alot better. Same reason alot of tiny gyms are louder then arenas.

lol me and my friends were trying to sell tickets for the game, not my seats but ones some friends gave us for free and we couldnt even give them away lol.

I was at the game and I honestly think one reason the game was so loud was b/c of BEER. There were alot of people drinking and the lines were very long to get beers. I really think that this is one reason the crowd was so into it.

I also think another reason that it was so loud is b/c that the game was so competitive. Plus, the two teams really seemed to go at it like they were long time rivals. Maybe b/c it was such a physical game, I don't know.

I was watching that Duke game Monday night and I noticed how small their place looked but they were packed in and weren't playing anybody that was ranked. How many does TBA seat?

20,000+ I think it's actually around 25,000.

i hope they somehow make the stands closer to the floor and put the students on the side of the court instead of the end.

Tough to do the second part of that. The old folks in the Arena Fund seats aren't going to willingly move.

that'll never happen. It'll make the university lose money too because they'll be giving $40 seats to students for free

Well. . . .we could just wait 3-4 years and half will probably be dead.

Sorry, that was uncalled for. I'm just tired of duds spoiling the atmosphere at every major UT athletic event.

I'm sure that some of the people that sit closest to the floor will move to the luxury boxes, etc. when they are completed, but they probably still won't open up more seating close to the floor for students. Too bad!

i think there absolutely nuts man when thompson is packed i dont see anywhere that could be much louder. ive experience kentucky and fl there last year and it litterally gave you a headache to listen to the roar of the crowd same thing against memphis

It was definitely loud in TBA for the Texas game, and that was even with alot of the students out for the holidays. When Lofton hit the 3 to give Tennessee the lead late in regulation, and also on the 5-second call against Texas on the side out-of-bounds play, it was as loud in TBA as I can remember for any game that I've attended.

EXACTLY. The GEC was made with music in mind, therefore, it holds the sound.

maybe its us nashvillians. Preds are the loudest arena in the nhl, TITANS used to be loudest in the nfl, and since theyre winning its going back up to the top and the UT game at the GEC was really loud.

Neither of those schools used premium seating as an enticement to raise money to build their current facilities. Therefore, they don't have contractual obligations to provide donors with the best seats. Furthermore, Duke has a much smaller local fan base. They can afford to give the students the quality seats, most of Duke's big donors live in New Jersey or New York, not Durham. Florida also had a scant basketball following when their current seasting configuration was established.

Talk to Don Cherry, Barry Melrose, Mike Breen, Darren Pang, or any of a hundred guys who actually cover the NHL on a regular basis. Nashville is a library compared to places like Detroit, Phliladelphia, and Calgary. Also, the fans in those markets actually understand the game and don't have to have icing explained to them every five minutes.
