'12 IN DT Tyrone Pearson

WOW!

We just can't seem to catch a break when it comes to recruiting the DL. You would think playing time available the second a kid steps on campus in the SEC would be enough.

This is really setting Dooley's closing ability to empty when you have everything in your favor and the kid picks a lesser school.

Not at all. We passed on Tyrone because, as it stands right now, he has a 0% chance of qualifying.

Something seems to be off here I agree. How can every other SEC school just pick and choose who they like for the DL and Tennessee seems to swing and miss like a blind man facing Aroldis Chapman? When UCF and New Mexico are out recruiting us on the DL...someone needs to address it. SERIOUSLY!

Maybe we can keep slow playing Borne in hopes of landing all these supposed DTs that have us in their top 3. When we finally tell him we are ready to take him as we missed on the other 44 kids.....he announces for Bowling Green.

Weird....it did not stop us from allowing Corey Smith to commit. He had 0% chance as well at a position of MUCH less need.

We need that kind of info out there to help Dooley. That would make sense. I had thought earlier that Pearson was one of our main DT prospects.

It seems we feel good about alot of the higher rated kids. Well, right up until they commit elsewhere. I can't think of 1 DT who has stated we(The Vols) lead for other than Borne. O'Brien did at one time...but I think that has changed.

O'Brien would be a Vol if NSD was today.

Wow. He must have some serious grade issues.

Would he have grade issues with offers from Vandy and Stanford? I would think he would be sitting pretty well grade wise. With offers from Bama, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and about 2 dozen others....passing on the kid does not make alot of sense.

Does it make sense that he would pick UCF over those schools? No.

Everyone passed on him.

This happens all the time in recruiting. A kid will get offers from programs all across the country, but once the schools become aware of potential grade issues, they may start to back off and the kid won't have a committable offer.

It's really not that hard to understand.

Exactly. A lot offer of the film they see. Then after researching, they discover the grades and retract the offer.

You would think schools like Vandy and Stanford with their tougher academic standards would do a little more research before offering kids who could never play there.

Pearson has zero chance of qualifying TODAY. He could make it, but it would take a miracle. Pretty obvious we backed off. Just don't have room for non-qualifiers with the new SEC rule.

Sucks too cuz he would have helped us with Day.

Pace, you seem a little negative, do you not remember last year or something? Haven't you figured out how this shiz works yet? Our class will be fine without this guy.

They offer quickly b/c that is one of their recruiting techniques. It looks good for them to come in as the first offer. That is important, but obviously, not everything. They need to be quick on the draw and evaluate talent to try and gain any advantage they can.

I will admit I am very negative when it comes to DL recruiting as for SEVERAL years now we have struggled. Everyone likes to play the "we are in on better players" card....but yet these better players seem to go elsewhere. Yes, our class last year was solid....but was still seriously lacking at the main position of need DT.

We can keep landing all these great offensive players....but if our defense gets shoved all over the field..we will still keep losing.

I feel confident with our defensive recruits last year as does the coaching staff.

I feel good about last years DL class as well, we just need about 7-8 more in THIS class. Everytime we "pass" on one or ask them to wait while we hope to land a bigger target...puts us 1 step closer to coming up short again.

Day is a good prospect, but it's still June. Didn't this kid transfer schools too?? Seems like he might be a clearinghouse nightmare for SEC schools.
