The only way I freeze to death is during the 3 mile walk back to town.

How many people in the USA live this lifestyle? So sad

It seems like he was "homeless" in a way and maybe the way he wanted it. Appears he was doing nothing other than traveling around enjoying the country. Camping, hiking, etc. in retirement until ya die. I could live that life style.

The article stated that it appeared that he knew the area well. Curious, that if he did, why he didn't attempt to walk out.

My great uncle wandered after his divorce in the late 70's, cruising the west and far north until 2005, when his eyes got too bad to drive anymore.

Do they get alot of surprise snow storms in this part of the country? I think a huge percentage of 68 year old men can recite the weather forecast, even if they live in their truck.

I took snowed in to mean he could not physically traverse the snow. Like, there was several feet of it.

And yes, that sort of weather is common in the cascades. Folks die up there every year when not prepared.

In certain conditions, 3 miles might as well be 30. Especially at 68.
