Disagree with everything in this article except for the obvious part about potential NCAA sanctions.
1. Who cares what Tennessee basketball was before Pearl got here? Pearl showed the country that you CAN win at Tennessee. So the mediocrity before him shouldn't scare any coach who knows they are capable of recruiting.
2. The roster does look bad coming in, but the roster wasn't stacked with All-Americans when Bruce got here, and look at what he did.
3. The line about this is a football school and anything people care about with basketball is secondary. False. It USED to be that way. After being top 5 in attendance nationally over Pearl's tenure, and from obvious conversation with other Tennessee fans over the past 6 years, it is obvious that this just is not the case anymore.
In my opinion, the only two things that are going to scare potential coaches from taking the Tenn job are the potential sanctions and the uncertainty with the AD. Unfortunately, those are two MAJOR question marks. This article was just written by some national pundit who hasn't paid any attention to the atmosphere surrounding UT bball over the past 6 years, but was asked to write up an article that is junior at best.
He also showed the country you can win at Milwaukee. They had never made the NCAA tournament or NIT prior and are barely over .500 since he left.
As for recruiting, you said it best. "Look at what Bruce did". The top basketball recruits have never lined up at the door to play basketball at Tennessee. They started lining up to play for Bruce. Ware and Jones wanting out confirms this. If they wanted to play for the university, they would stick with their commitment. They've been recruited for a couple of years, have seen the facilities and probably even imagined themselves playing in front of 24,000 people. It took them all of 24 hours to decide they don't care about any of that without the coach who recruited them.
