Jackson Lee blasts 'demeaning' Pepsi Super Bowl ad - The Hill's Floor Action

Jackson Lee said it was ridiculous for the soft drink maker to air the advertisement during African-American history month.
"In this month of African-American history where we're trying to celebrate what is good and great, it certainly seems ridiculous that Pepsi would utilize this kind of humor," she said. "It was not humorous. It was demeaning — an African-American woman throwing something at an African-American male and winding up hitting a Caucasian woman."

Jackson Lee said she has a sense of humor and believes in the First Amendment. She also said the Super Bowl is a great time for "fellowship" with family members.

"That is why I'm so disappointed with the Pepsi advertisement that showed a demeaning role for African American women, in an ad that showed a can being thrown and being utilized to wound someone else or hit someone else," she said.

"I think that we can come together in a much better way, sell Pepsi, and as well talk about good nutrition," she said. "But, frankly, I consider this insulting, and so did many other women of all colors."

I have a serious question for you Coach since this is something I can't truly speak on being white. Do you feel that racism still actually exist or do you feel that the media and government makes it look like it exist because as long as we are divided we need the media and government to help right wrongs?

I personally feel that racism died a decade ago but the constant media and government calling things racist and dividing the races has helped racism regain steam ... which is not cool.

Been to Mississippi lately? I was there the day after the elevctions. The first 4 pages were all about local and state results. Had a 1 paragraph article on page 5 saying Obama was the new president. True story.

I drove through Mississippi once on my way to the Sugar Bowl. I completely agree that parts of this country still have issues. I would also state that Mississippi is a very small segment of our country and does not reflect the overall viewpoint of most Americans. I would say that the 47 of the states have moved on beyond racism. Mississippi, Alabama, and West Virginia still have some issues.

and that's racist? In what way?

I think racism is alive and well today, but I also believe that the media gives air time to idiots who will cry racism any time they're looked at cross-eyed.

do you even know what racism is?

Mississippi QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

Mississippi may have it's problems, but to say the entire state is racist is ridiculous and ignorant.

I do know what it is. I never claimed everyone in MS was racist. The Daily Corinthian sure is.

How many other states newspapers had the presidential election results buried on page 5? You from Corinth? Thats the paper I am refering to.

again, how is that racist?

The Daily Corinthian is a tiny newspaper, and you're going to claim the entire state is racist because a newspaper with a paid circulation of just over 11 thousand buries the presidential election results on page 5?

Maybe the paper thought that the local elections were more important.

If you really believe that racism only exists in those states, I have some ocean front property in Arizona I'll let you have cheap.

ok, so what you're saying is that every newspaper in Mississippi, Alabama and West Virginia are exclusively racist.

Aside from the fact that we have to take your word for it that the coverage was on page 5 and not on the front page you still haven't proven, to me or anybody else that the Daily Corintian's coverage of Obama's election was racist.

Now please correct me if I'm wrong but all of the south were red states during the elections. For years southerners were or are democrats, what changed? I know guys I work with who are "democrats" but voted republican during elections. Why? I do feel that ever since president obama has been in office that race relations has not been chummy. This is JMO, I'm friends with anyone. We ALL need to rise above the petty BS and move the ball down the field

Other than Jimmy Carter, a democrat hasn't won the southeast vote since arguably 1956. JFK could make a case.

Obama won VA, NC, and Florida. A democrat hasn't done that since Carter. Clinton is the only candidate to pull at least one, and that was Florida.
