Actors that didn't make it

This question is pretty difficult, because how do you base making it??

If we have heard of the actor, he damn well made it.

Dude, Angels in the Outfield, Camp Nowhere, Addams Family movie, Roger Rabbit, Eight Men Out. And he's won numerous Emmys for TV and voice-over work. Now he's on Broadway...C'mon man!

and let's not forget he played the Klingon Commander Kruge in Star Trek III:The Search for Spock. Along with John Larroquette.

Merrit Butrick, another actor who never made it, played Kirk's son.

Who are some actors you've seen over the years that were hyped or seemed to be the "next big star" and it never happened? Here's a few I can think of:

Tom Everett Scott - When That Thing You Do came out, I remember the buzz being he was the "next Tom Hanks". And it never really happened.

C. Thomas Howell - Broke out in The Outsiders, had some more 80s hits, then decided to make Soul Man.

C. Thomas Howell's career went to crap due to the movie where he pretended to be black. Soul something. It left a bad taste in alot of Hollywoods mouth towards him and he never quite rebounded.

Christopher Lloyd

In your defense, you may have said this because half the roles CL plays you don't even know it's him. I was watching Roger Rabbit with my kids a few months back and realized for the first time it was him. Guy can act.

Look at my original post. It's not about simply making it, I mean making it big. The perfect example is Thomas Everett Scott. Like I already posted, when That Thing You Do came out, he generated a lot of buzz and he was being hyped as the next Tom Hanks. I think it's safe to say 14 years later he has never even gotten close to that, and has never even starred in a movie as good. He's pretty much a one hit wonder for movies.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas
Ethan Hawke
Sean Bean

I'm just asking, not saying you're wrong, just asking.

Ethan Hawke? He's made a ton of movies and still works.

Sean Bean? Lord of the Rings, Golden eye, Patriot Games, Troy, National Treasure.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas? Well, he shoulda kept his day job.

I think Bean is a fine actor, but he always seems to be playing second fiddle to someone like Nicolas Cage, Robert DeNiro, Viggo Mortensen, etc.

Hawke is the same way. He has a few more leading roles than Bean and he does have a solid history, but going by the criteria the OP set, he never became the "next big star".

Thomas' best work was in "Man of the House" but only because he got to call Chevy Chase "Squatting Dog".
