Beats headphones are alright but grossly overpriced for what they are.

+1000. They're good but not for that price, you can find much better value. Your kind of paying for the coolness value of it

That's what a lot of people have told me. "Buying my coolness" and your paying for a brand name. I think I've now gone away from getting this. Have you guys heard of Audio Technica ATH M50s? They are like $150 and are supposed to be great.

More reasonable, but AT isn't my favorite.

If you're looking for good actual studio headphones, visit Guitar Center or your local pro music store. The salesperson will be your best point of advice.

In most professional studios, AKG is the brand used most, K240 to be specific. Here's a link to the some that are considered "entry level" headphones, AKG K121 Studio.

Do you need studio headphones or are you just looking for something to listen to casually?

Casual listening, I want to get the most out of my music listening.

I've owned 3 pairs of Sennheisers and they have all been well worth the money. The HD 485, HD 280 pro, HD 650. I don't think they make the 485 anymore though. They make a ton of models so do some research first.

The Shure SRH840 are really good too and they are $150 on Amazon right now. If it was my money, I'd get those.

I still have my Stanton headphones from when i DJ'd. great over ear headphones with noise cancelling and stereo/mono switch (which may not be of any use to you). They were/are the best headphones i've had.

I mean, I'm no DJ or producer. I'm just a guy who loves listening to my music. Is it silly for me to even wanna buy studio headphones that cost in the hundreds?

No...I have a pair of those that fit over your ears and cancel all noise just for listening to music and gaming. They are fantastic. Granted they weren't super expensive but $70 for headphones was more than I was used to paying.

If you love music, then sound quality is of utmost importance. At least it is for me, I love listening to music as well.

That said, the simplest solution for good headphones is go to a Best Buy or someplace that has a selection you can demo, and listen to some. If they sound good to you and are in your price range, then they are good. Just check online for reviews as far as quality (do they fall apart?) and you will be set.

Since this thread is about headphones not ear buds.

I've looked at the Beats Studios and the Bose Quiet Comforts at Best Buy. I've really been considering purchasing a pair, but $299 seems high and I'm sure there are better headphones available for less.

Anyone have any other alternatives? I like the idea of noise canceling.

Beats and Bose (all Bose products, for that matter) = decent but overpriced.

Try Sennheiser and Sony as well.
