There are a few situations in football that merit flagrant penalties. For example there is absutely no reason not to horse collar, facemask, trip, kick, or punch a player returning a 2-point conversion attempt the other way. One day I would love to see a quarterback heave his helmet at said interception returner and knock him off his feet... 15 yard penalty on the kickoff - big deal.

Our Vols were faced with such a situation after we won the game Saturday. The proper gameplan:

1. Put every 2nd stringer in on D
2. The instant the O-line is set the entire D-line bullrushes the O-line, and the linebackers go Waterboy style at the quarterback before they can attempt a snap (or better yet they do snap it and get destroyed)
3. Earn several penalties ranging between 2 and 12 inches
4. Make the O-line jump by faking the bullrush (or better yet piss them off enough to commit a personal foul)
5. Send the first string D in to make one stop on 4th and 5 against an abused offense.
6. Hold them, game over

Maybe next time. I hate that this happened, but these Vols are reminding of the late 80's A LOT! And I love watching every minute they play. GBO

I'd rather be 0-1 with dignity

There's no loss of dignity when you outcoach your opponent within the set of rules. I'm not even suggesting a personal foul, just simple encroachment. You must be a nice guy crusse... richt seems like a nice guy too.

That's pretty elaborate for a team that can't even get the right amount of people on the field.

If you gave up a triple in the 9th inning with none out, intentionally walk the next 2 guys to get the forceout. But don't bean the next 2 batters because that's legal.

Well, you may increase the risk of wild pitch if you do that. And if you're in the pro's and hit two batters in a row, you're gonna be tossed. But anyway, I'm just analyzing, I see the point you were making.

Just a matter of dignity and respect for the game, that's all

I understand your point and respect it...

But, at least in principle, it's really no different than burning timeouts to ice a kicker, taking a delay of game to eat clock, or in baseball sliding into 2nd to try and kill a double play at first (taking 2nd baseman's legs out after he tags bag). All of these are either a misuse or borderline abuse of rules to gain an advantage. But each example I gave is viewed as -- for the most part -- normal and within the bounds of fair play and sportsmanship.

Just saying...

were you saying this last year when Kiffin was coach? If so, I apologize, but a lot on here weren't... Win at all cost, dignity and respect for the game were second tier.

The Argentinian handball in the WCup comes to mind. In bball, on defense, ill kick a bounce pass in a heartbeat.

What about defPI to prevent an obvious TDown, or a bball/soccer player throwing the ball into play off the back of an unsuspecting defender?

Intentionally missing a Fthrow off the rim in order to get the rebound? Every mentioned circumstance is a good play in my book. Throwing the ball off of a defender when going out of bounds together? Do it!

Tactics in recruiting, such as saying a recruit's name on air, doesn't bother me. Blatantly penalizing yourself in a classless way on the field of play is different. If Kiffin did that, I missed it.

Think back to the way Wisconsin ended a half against Penn State a few years ago when the weird clock rules were changed regarding kickoffs. Taking advantage of broken rules in such a classless way is absurd. As a fan that openly cheers for the Badgers (when they aren't playing UT), I was very upset with that move by Bielema.

That's not what you initially said though. You said winning should not come at the expense of a program's, or individual's, dignity and respect of the game. Kiffin's focus on "winning" in recruiting definitely came at the expense of our program's dignity. You and I both know that the worst of Kiffin's tactics was not when he mentioned a player's name on the radio.
