athiests and agnostics know more about religion than churchgoers

You will NEVER hear me say they don't exist. I grew up in a country Southern Baptist church, you don't think I understand how much culture and legalism has infected the church? I am fully aware of it.

I am thankful to be in a church now where primarily those things aren't prevalent. The leaders truly try to lead by the Bible alone. They are not perfect, but they try to rely solely on what the Bible says.

But to say Jesus wasn't a fan of organized religion, aka the church, is just false.

but i guess my question is how people can be so sure what hasn't infected the church and what has? I don't understand absolutes from anyone.

The point is valid, Jesus himself lost his temper when he saw money changers and priests pimping out God for money. IMO this example applies perfectly to one of the aspects about the Christian faith today, mega churches who pimp out merchandise and their pastors who live in plush neighborhoods.

At the very least it appears Jesus was displeased with many aspects of religion as it existed in his time and many of those very things are becoming prevalent once again, at least IMO. It is one of the very reasons I choose not to be part of any organized religion or put a label on my beliefs other than to say I am a believer.

it is the non-believers that are "stuck" on the labels

Man has immortal soul that can be tormented forever? Eze. 18:4 & Eccl. 9:5,10 might disagree.

That's not immoral? Next time McDonalds screws up my order I'll burn the place to the ground and say that God did the same thing and no one is on his case. Somehow I doubt it will be a viable defense.

pure ignorance, sorry......that all happened in the Old Covenant....God has promised not to bring his wrath in that manner these days.....hell is his punishment of choice now

since you are a human and not god, how do you decide what part of your church's beliefs potentially is human's interfering and what part is god word?

Gotcha.

Well, some of it is self-explanitory by what The Bible says. Don't steal, don't commit adultery, don't worry, etc.

As for the non-self explanitory....my best explanation (which I know isn't going to suffice) is simply determined/inferred through prayer, thought, discussion among believers. The Bible says, and I believe, that if you genuinely seek to do God's will ask Him and you'll receive what you ask.

No church is 100% immune to not having human ideas/interpertations of what the Bible says. I wish it were not so, but it is. But, I'd much rather be a part of a congregation actively seeking to try to follow God's word than one who could care less.

Jeremiah 7:31 KJV - "And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came into my heart."

When did God change his mind? Or is teaching hellfire really making god out to be a hypocrite?

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Don't bring the OT into a Christian discussion.

Didn someone reference Sodom & Gommorah earlier? That's in the OT. I think 2 Tim 3:16,17 might feel differently about basing beliefs on only half the Bible.

So it was OK until Jesus came around and now its wrong? It seems like people had it better in the old days when it was a quick death instead of an eternity of torment.

so let me get this straight. for millions of years god decided to do bring his wrath one way and a simple 2,000 years ago completely changed his mind?
