in the college basketball section over at SI.com is a pretty good take on Bruce Pearl.

I thought it was a good take. Very interesting way to think about it too.

when are we going to start seeing articles depicting how reporters bend the truth, lie, and cut each others throats just to get a story out first....Michael Rosenberg: Pearl is a liar? hi pot meet kettle!

The article misses the mark on a key point. He didn't lie to investigators about excessive phone calls to recruits, that's not what this is centered around.

Also, I wonder if a certain Big Ten coach whose name hasn't hit the airwaves yet will have the same fate that Pearl did 20 yrs ago?

This is not me defending Pearl for what he did by the way.

Hey, maybe we can get an incompetent coach who knows how to get away with lying and cheating. Or, maybe we could get Pearl fired and set our program back to wander in the wilderness for 4 or 5 years like the football program. That would make a lot of people very happy, including KY Vandy, Memphis, FL, etal.

It should, but he'll get a pass because the majority of the profession finds Pearl getting his to be funny. Further, the information he provided is probably going to end up being the least of UT's problems.

Eh, nothing groundbreaking there. seems like everyone's writing about the same thing.

You wanted the rest of us to see the real Bruce, and we did this week. Now, I want Calipari to be caught in a lie. Please do not lump me in with the "but Calipari cheats more" crowd, as none of those posts the past few days were mine. But, I do think that throwing in the Calipari pic and caption and then listing his accomplishments without throwing in the probation that UMass and Memphis received, makes Rosenberg look like a Calipari fan who really enjoyed himself this past week.

I'm not saying I'm sure it's going to be awful. I'm simply pointing out that an illegal home visit and some other contact violations are nowhere near as serious as lying to the investigators.

Yeah thats the disturbing part.

Nope. By state statute, only Wade Houston, Jerry Green, Buzz Peterson, or Bruce Pearl are allowed to coach basketball at Tennessee.

Perhaps, but, by statute, can Don DeVoe carry his pistol into Bar Knoxville when he takes his family to dine there?

Thanks for clarifying.

I don't know anything about UT's new program for monitoring contacts with recruits. My concern is whether Bruce will have the sense to stay within the rules regarding phone calls going forward.

Sampson was told he couldn't call a recruit for a period of time, and then he just did it anyway. I couldn't believe how stupid he was. Doing it again after being sanctioned was what got IU gutted. I do not think we'd be able to just go hire a Tom Crean and start rebuilding if our program were to be gutted like that.

I see more penalties to come. I hope they take away scholarships instead of post season play. I am not one of those that believe we could not find another coach to be successful with the program, I just enjoy watching Pearl's teams and style of play.

Most schools are not as proactive as UT was with self-imposing sanctions. Surely, they won't hit us in the gut with a postseason ban. That would hurt. A scholarship reduction wouldn't surprise me though.

Agreed. A coaching search is the last thing UT needs at this point, and it would not yield good results, IMO.

You do know we have more options, right?

And yet it's not like Tennessee has a stellar track record of hiring basketball coaches in the last 30 years. UT's administration could hire a competent replacement, but history tells us that isn't likely.

Remind me who made all of those hires.
