Do with it whatever you like. Many hit songs were simply adaptations of classics that were never widely published. Elvis owes much of his inspiration and songs to ex slaves and their children.

I like what the Fugees did with Killing Me Softly.

I also like what a few of the modern bands did with 80's music. Not so much because they were great remakes but because it's nice to hear a new twist on a familiar song you were familiar with growing up.
