World Cup Soccer........Boring as H*ll

They go to an OT system (penalty kicks) after the Group Stage is over. That's how England got eliminated in the 2006 World Cup against Portugal.

That has been covered. I'm offering an alternative so that the Group Stages could also be settled on something other than a tie or the luck of penalty kicks.

The OP said it was boring - oh the horrors!

The response; people that don't like it are dumb, irrational, xenophobes, close-minded, etc.

I'm a little hesitant to mention it, but I MFin hate some MFin squash - both kinds.

How about simultaneous corner kicks by both teams at both ends of the field? Now that would take some strategy. :eek:k:

Then on the other end of the spectrum... all the soccerphiles like to say "if you don't like soccer you are just too stupid to understand it."

Most of the criticisms I've seen are of total ignorance towards the sport... not genuine lack of interest.

If a European said "Americans only like football because they just like a sport that caters to their feeble-minded ADD and they can just sit in front of a TV and get even fatter" would you say that that individual put an effort to watch the sport or that they were being ignorant about the sport?

I'd say they just described 50% of the football fans I know.

I simply don't give a crap.

Baseball is losing viewers just like all slow moving sports. Youth soccer has been the most popular sport in America since the 80s and hordes are into it, so it's tough to argue that it's lack of understanding.

Disagree with that. I know plenty of people who played youth soccer who don't understand very much about the game outside the obvious rules.

It's because it's cheap. That's why it's the world's game. The popular everywhere argument is rooted in price.

This is true, but it doesn't make the game less interesting, IMO. Americans have no reason to show any less interest in football or basketball, because they're awesome, so soccer won't be able to take over, but it doesn't mean it's an inferior sport in any way.

Who said inferior? It's just not as TV ready.

No, it's not. It also doesn't make you ADD or an idiot if you don't like soccer.

sadly enough, here is what a good chunk of our population thinks about the game. it's an older thread from last year on city-data that i happened upon last night. i could only get through the first page.......

Why is a boring, unwatchable sport like soccer the most watched TV sport in the world (football, basketball) - City-Data Forum

I'm a little late to the party. But, this quote (below not above) made me laugh.

that's true, if i or you wanted to become proffesional soccer players tommorow we probably could. Any regular person could become a soccer player, its so easy it takes no skill or physical attributes except jog and kick a ball. Look at any soccer player, they are physically nothing, any NFL player is like 6'3 280lb and would dominate soccer. Imagine if any NFL player played soccer America would win the world cup every year.

This fellow obviously has never watched a soccer match. I would love to see a lineman sized individual try and keep up with pro players.

it's always great when people watch every 4 years and make a judgment on soccer. It's ok some just aren't meant to understand it

So if you watch soccer throughout the season, you'll understand why a 1-1 game is exciting?

Elaborate.

Co-sign. Americans prefer games that involve scoring; there is very little scoring in soccer.

This is the driving force behind American indifference to the game. And I respectfully submit that it makes you neither ADD nor ignorant to prefer games with more scoring.

How Nascar fits into my argument is questionable. I don't like Nascar. But there are many people that do, and those people (for the most part) don't watch soccer. Perhaps one could reconcile this disconnect with some sort of "motor" exception.

not really what I meant. If your exposure is a couple weeks every 4 yrs then it's just more difficult to understand.

and if the 1-1 game you're talking about was US/England then I wasn't that impressed with the play but it was still exciting in parts

I don't like soccer; but I generally understand it and can get what teams are doing. That said, I actually enjoyed the game because my Jingoism knows no bounds. Hell, I watched curling religiously a few months ago.
