The "official" Lost thread

I think it would be a disaster, those who liked it the way it was would be disappointed and sequels are hardly ever up to par. We would likely be very disappointed.

as good as the series as a whole was, they would have a good chance to pull it off.

In the back of my head, i wonder if DL and CC will get all Lucas on us and reboot this series in some form to focus more on the island mysteries angle.Maybe a few failed projects later i could see it as a possibility.
They won't explain anything that they haven't already. The minute you explain something that is mysterious, the mystery goes away, and the mystery is what makes it interesting. Think of Star Wars and the midichlorians.

The thing to remember about knowledge is that it enhances everything but it also limits everything.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see much similarity between the island in the context of Lost vs. the force in the context of Star Wars.

The force was an example of a mystery that was ruined by an explanation. The same thing would have happened if they gave a scientific explanation of the island.

The original explanation of the force was entirely spiritual. The island has always been presented as a scientific construct with implied underlying explanations.

I'm not comparing the two outside of saying they were both mysterious.

I would go as far as to say they are almost opposite in how they were used. The force started out as spiritual\metaphysical (a 'force' that binds the universe and everything in it) and Lucas screwed up by trying to reduce it to scientific explanation by introducing the midiclorian concept.
In contrast, the island always had underlying implied scientific foundations (the statues, symbols, Dharma, pyramids, etc.). The writers screwed up by ignoring all of that annd trying to say, at the end, that it's just a magical island and that's the end of it.

It amazes me how you continue to over-think a simple statement.

just because dharma was on the island and was doing research doesn't mean the island had underlying scientific themes. outside of dharma and maybe the electromagnetism, everything else was under the category of mythology IMO.

This.

I don't see what Dharma as to do with it being mysterious; pretty much everything about Dharma was explained.

The rest of the stuff (the light, temple, statue, symbols) had little to do with "scientific" and way more to do with mysterious.

I wonder if any of the Lost novels,(what 3 so far) and the one (coming out)the producers have eluded to delve deeper into the mythology? Anyone know?

Just found the feature that tells you how many post you have in a thread. This is my post #130 in this thread.

That is 6.066 percent of all fandom of the lost series on Volnation.......

Granted that 'scientific' is probably the wrong word. 'Physical' is probably the better word. As opposed to 'metaphysical'. The island and the light source is a geographically and spatially located phenomenon, as opposed to a metaphysical all-encompassing concept. This is reinforced with all of the physical hints planted by the writers, such as the ability to control it with the hatch, the light's ability to create a physical smoke monster, the wells, the sickness, the greek and egyptian symbology, etc. The point being that some kind of explanation, other that pure spiritualism, is clearly implied.

Took awhile to run down.

Novels - Lostpedia - The Lost Encyclopedia

Could not find what the producers were eluding to, as far as the next novel, not a whiff.

I will also include all the works of literature that made any type of appearance on the show.

Books - Lostpedia - The Lost Encyclopedia

Maybe I'm drunk, but it looks like they left off Catch-22. When the first chick from the freigher parachutes onto the island, Desmond finds a foreign (Spanish, maybe) copy of the book with his and Penny's picture inside. It's a very good book that I'd highly recommend.

I can remember it being quoted\referred to as well. It's been 30 years sense I read it, but I agree, good book.

you are right about Catch-22, I don't remember Naomi (the woman from the freighter) having it, but it is definitely seen in this season's episodes, I believe as part of Illana's stuff right after she blows up. It, too, was in spanish.
