I am split on this, torn is probably a better word to use. I have no problem with moderate Muslims or their free will to worship as they desire. I do find it a little insensitive to the country as well as those who lost loved ones on 9-11 to allow a Mosque to be built on the site that militant Muslims killed so many people.

I think I have heard that this building will also house places of worship for people of other faiths, that makes it a little easier for me to wrap my head around.

What should the range be? This just said it was a building that was damaged by debris. As far as I read... this isn't on the "9/11 site".

If the US is trying to learn something from 9/11 then being religiously intolerant will be a step back in the freedoms that all citizens are supposed to be afforded. Do you punish the brother or sister of a murderer? No, you do not. 98% of all Muslims I've met have been almost identical to Christians. Some of them take their stance a bit too far. Should the world judge Christianity/US because of, say, the Westboro Baptist Church?

If it isn't on the 9-11 site proper then that changes my opinion and puts to rest any reservations I might have had otherwise.

I think it would illustrate the good will of Islam if a Baptist church were established in Mecca.

Why? Is NYC a holy city?

So it's okay to build a 1,776 foot high skyscraper directly on top of the site... but it's not okay for muslims to have a place of worship near there?

Tell me how they're not different.

The right wing hate mongers will simply see this as the entire Muslim world -- all billion of them -- as giving us the middle finger.

I'd like for them to have been a bit more sensitive. And its politically stupid. But the real downside of this is fueling the fire of those who have chosen to lump all Muslims into one manner of thinking and acting.

What does that have to do with anything?

Are you suggesting that they would be intolerant of someone building a Baptist church in Mecca?

NYC is far from holy but the twin towers site has become a symbol to the US. It does not seem politically correct to have any Muslim symbols apparent close to that site.

Then again, the PC test is only selectively applied.

This idea that America stands for such a high level of idealism that we should be willing to sacrifice any national pride or benefit in favor of the global good is getting pretty tired. No one else will extend a similar courtesy to us. There is no reciprocity or even respect for the forbearance our country already shows at so many levels of our society. Its all give and no get.

It is a politically stupid and insensitive move. The reason GS gets so riled up about this stuff is because he understands what a lot of people don't (both liberal and conservative). Muslims...even those who are practicing inside the US...are religously obligated to create theocracy everywhere that they move.

I'm not saying it is going to work, but that mission is absolutely primary to every Mosque that exists in the US regardless of what you think.

I don't get all tore up, because I know it will never happen. I know it doesn't always look like it, but I truly believe the majority of Americans still value their freedom more than anything else.

of course they'd have a problem with it because they're not the UNITED STATES... this whole other countries do it so lets do it argument, really is weak at best.

we have more culture in this country than the whole world combined. we shouldn't and quite frankly can't be like other countries due to the sheer number of people that have different cultures.
