Overrated Bands

Assuming overrated means that the band received more attention then they merited and merit can be talent, popularity and influence on other bands:

Beck
Pearl Jam
Oasis
Radiohead

Name a better band that came out in the last 20 years.

Pearl Jam has made some of the most influential and meaningful music released since their inception.

They continue to produce an amazing product to this very day.

I have been to a ton of concerts, seen them twice and they are far and away the best live band that I have ever seen.

Does it have to be a band in the traditional sense, or can I name any act? Not that I can't name a better traditional band (I can), but I could also just toss out OutKast and the conversation would be effectively over. And I like Pearl Jam. "Elderly Woman Behind A Counter In a Small Town" and "Better Man" are two of my all-time favs.

Is Beck rated highly enough to be overrated?
I would agree with you on Radiohead.

Grunge was the precursor to bands like Nickelback which shows you all you need to know about that whole genre. I don't know how downtuning your guitars and screaming in a deep voice about how your parents didnt love you enough constitutes as great music.

I'm not looking at how highly rated one is - just the rating relative to the merit. IMHO, Beck got tons of press and love for being a ground breaker but his stuff doesn't match the hype.

Love OutKast, but they aren't a band.

Radiohead is great...very talented and very influential.
Oasis got too much play for " What's the Story Morning Glory " ( great album, by the way ) and probably got too big too quick.

You can't blame a band for being popular, as far as talent and influence I would say most bands would trade their nuts to be as good as Pearl Jam and Radiohead.

We'll see. I'm not seeing a rash of upcoming bands that have PJ or RH as their primary influences. Both are talented to be sure but the world is littered with talented bands.

For what PJ produced I just don't see them as meriting the hype. RH has definitely been more prolific but they too seem overhyped to me.

Journey was a much more prolific band than PJ and equally talented but PJ seems to have more hype - that's what I'm getting at (and I'm not a Journey fan).

Aren't pretty much all bands that last a good while at some point overrated? I mean you hang around long enough eventually someone is going to hate you or grow tired of you, even if you still are selling platinum albums and selling out arenas.

Exactly...technically speaking, just from a pure musical standpoint, Nirvana could not hold a candle to Soungarden, Pearl Jam, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, AIC...list goes on and on from bands of that era.

Nirvana is like the QB of the Grunge era, they get way too much credit for what happened back then, sorta like a QB does when things are going well.

I agree about Nirvana. I liked them and all but I've always thought they got too much credit and were overrated.

Not to mention Cobain couldn't sing worth a crap. I know melodic voices aren't a requirement for any type of rock band but his voice sucked.

i'm not so sure about that based on lyrics alone not to mention musically. that is for sure a matter of opinion. journey is somewhat of a ballad driven band. PJ's music touches several different types of music. imo that is why they have more hype.

maybe i am biased, because PJ is my favorite but i honestly don't think there is even any comparison between those 2.

My thoughts exactly, Journey was decent.

Most people judge Pearl Jam based on what they hear on the radio, their b-sides are better than what most bands could ever produce.

Is Beck really that popular? I'd say he's a solid artist that's not really all that well known. He's defintely not some unknown, but you don't hear much of him on the radio and I doubt his album sales are antyhing fantastic. Radiohead has talent coming out of their butts and a lot of really good albums. Their stuff is weird and not for everyone, but they can make some really great music. And Pearl Jam just came out with a really good album, but I don't think it got much publicity. I could agree if you said PJ was overrated, but (and maybe I'm just not noticing) I don't see any current obsession with them.

lost dogs is an album music fans should check into if they have not already.

Setting aside Nirvana, which you've already voiced your opinion on, I'll go:

U2.
Weezer.
Kings of Leon.
Coldplay.
Green Day.

I'll rate Pearl Jam over R.E.M. and Radiohead. Some people *really* love Radiohead...I'm just not that into them.

There is an indie band or three that I would rate over Pearl Jam -- Death Cab being one example, possibly new pornographers as another -- because I think they've put out as much or more good material as Pearl Jam. But that's just my subjective opinion...they haven't had nearly the same kind of success that Pearl Jam has had.

Regarding Weezer, it's a polarizing pick, but I'm sticking with it. There are a lot of people whose musical taste I respect that don't like Weezer. But there are also a lot of people whose musical taste I respect that think Weezer is genius. I fall into the latter camp. At one point I had the song "Only In Dreams" on repeat for about 3 solid weeks.

No, he really isn't. I disagree with the poster that thought Beck was overrated. If anything, I think Beck is underrated.

You really put Kings of Leon above Pearl Jam.

Wow, I mean wow.

Seen Weezer in concert, decent.
Seen Death Cab for Cutie open for Pearl Jam, they were good.

I can see someone saying Weezer, they have a solid fan base but Kings of Leon?

I like them but they aren't even in the same breathe as PJ.

I like Coldplay, they admit to ripping others music off though, specifically Radiohead.

I'll put Kings of Leon over Pearl Jam every single day of the week. Kings of Leon is actually my favorite band. I've been on board with KOL since the "A-ha Shake" album.

Also, I may have been one of the few that was onto them back in "A-ha Shake" days, but that is certainly no longer the case. They are, by more than one measurably objective standard, the most popular band in the world at Time == now. I'm surprised that you are so surprised.

Kings of Leon will never be the biggest band in the world, retract that statement of lose all credibility.

If you think they are a better band, that is your opinion, no matter how warped it is.

You can see this in your crystal ball?

My statement was that by several measurably objective standards KOL was the most popular band in the world in 2009. I won't retract that statement because it is true.

Who, in your opinion, is the biggest band in the world right now? And what is your criteria?

There is a band called The Rolling Stones that sell out stadiums and charge a war pension to do so.

Meanwhile, KOL plays gigs like The Civic and probably couldn't sell it out for 30$ a ticket without a strong opening act.

I love Pearl Jam and will be a little biased in my assessments , your love of KOL is making you say crazy things like biggest band in the world.
