We all know that Tennessee has just made their third Sweet Sixteen in four years. Now that the second round is winding to a close, I thought I'd look back and see how that stacks up to the very best schools in the country. Even though college basketball has lots of one and done players, the vast majority still play for four years, so four years is a fairly sensible window by which to judge.

In that four year window, no school in the country has been to four Sweet Sixteens. Kansas would have had they won Saturday, and Xavier got closer than anyone, as they were an overtime away from their fourth (against Ohio State in 2007). Six, however, have been to three. Those happy six:

Kansas
Memphis
Michigan State
North Carolina
Tennessee
Xavier

Congratulations, Wayne Chism, you make up one of the most accomplished senior classes in the country. And look at that company!

its a shame the rest of the country and recruits don't recognize us as a program like the ones listed.

We haven't hit their top end yet, but we should be recognized for consistent good performance in the past few years. In that regard, we're at or near the top. Hopefully recruits will start recognizing that.

That is because we are not on that level yet, an Elite 8 berth won't change that...a Final Four appearance will get us a few steps closer.

Those programs didn't just make the Sweet 16, they advanced further, where we hit the wall.

yes, but still, sad to say, we're the only one of those 6 teams that hasn't reached the elite 8 in any of those years. Kansas and NC both won a title. Memphis was the national runner up. And i believe Michigan State made a final four run, which leaves as the lone men on the wrong side of the fence. If we can break through this year and hit a final four, then i think skies the limit for this basketball program for the next few years. We have top notch facilities, great fan support, and starting to perform on a consistent level. The only thing we're missing that the rest of those schools have is a rich tradition, and that can only be built if we get the recruits in.

With the exception of Xavier, the other schools have all made the Final Four, and 3 of them have national championships. And even Xavier has made an Elite 8.

While we've come a long ways from Buzzball, we still have a ways to go too.

They made the championship last year.

This is true... I am still impressed with our run so far and excited about the possibilities this week.

That Louisville game was a terrible matchup for us.

It was terrible time to start J.P. as our point guard. i would have loved to had Jordan Howell get a crack at it just to see. Obviously ramar was not point guard material, he was always a slashing 2 guard converted to point.

I really disagree with this. Jordan Howell wouldn't have done crap. He's a slower, less athletic version of Josh Bone that was shooting about 10% from 3 the whole last half of the year.

Great to see them in the 16 again. This team has over achieved to get there in my opinion. Yet when and if they lose, we better be ready to hear how bad our coach is, how our players dont do this or that, how we got lucky, how we need to be more like other teams, how we dont play consistent (even though being in the sweet 16 three out of four years). Did I mention that all of this will be said by our own fanbase. Simply amazing!!!

This.

Howell had been giving more than enough chances to prove himself but he never got out of his shooting funk.

Yes, which is why if we do lose this game, i will more than likely not be on here for at least a week. This fanbase is just absolutely depressing sometimes.
