Pearl to Iowa??

Yes, I'm sure Jim Tressel was so scared of Ferentz as he was winning the Big Ten for the fifth year in a row

And turning down NFL offers doesn't make you an awesome coach.

No it doesn't. And Al Groh is not a god. What I'm saying is that Ferentz was getting NFL offers, so Bob Bowlsby paid the man. Since then, he's won some games and done a solid job. They're not going to win national titles. It's still Iowa.

Oh and Tressel makes more than Ferentz, by the way.

Please. Ohio State is Ohio State and Iowa is Iowa. Iowa might pull out a few Big Ten titles occasionally, but they'll never overtake OSU as the dominant program. Pay Ferentz to stay there and he'll do as good as any coach could at Iowa.
Oh please. Good coaches can win anywhere given enough time. He's had time. He's an incredibly expensive fraud.

Kind of like Tennessee's relationship to Florida or Alabama.
That's crap. Recruits don't give a damn about Bama's claimed 1941 titles, and Gainesville being in Florida doesn't make it any better of a city. We're below them because they've had the best 2 coaches in the country for the last few years and we let Fulmer run our team straight into the dirt.

Comparing Iowa's history in athletics to Tennessee's is absurd on so many levels.

I was creating what is called an "analogy". Iowa is to Ohio State as Tennessee is to Florida/Bama.

I wasn't directly comparing the schools or their football traditions. That wouldn't be smart.

You might want to re-read my quote.

Saying "I don't see the gap closing anytime soon" is completely ignoring the fact that Ferentz has had more bad seasons than good. 2005-2007 are evidence of that. So the next time you want to suggest that I lack the ability to comprehend, perhaps you should think about what the hell you wrote.

Interesting. Good coaches can win anywhere. Except maybe Louisiana Tech.

If so it's only a development over the last year or so. So fine, this year Tressel was finally paid accordingly for his whipping of Iowa. You're also wrong assuming Ohio State is the Big 10s all time dominant program.

Dooley sucks. Anyone who tells you differently is an idiot. At least the intelligent posters here aren't in denial about our coaching situation.

I know Michigan is (was?) the dominant Big 10 program. I'm talking about current reality though.

You're so depressingly pathetic trying to get me to retract my statement by supporting the awful hire we made.

Go tell other people about how Florida has been a long time traditional power.

I don't care about what reality you live in. Michigan could be awful for 5 years and Iowa could fake competence for a couple season and Michigan is still vastly superior to that garbage program with a fraud coach.

This is going to sound weird coming from a Vols fan who grew up in central Ohio, but there was something strangely satisfying about watching Michigan effortlessly terrorize that conference for so long...

Gonzo, the point of this is. Iowa overpays their coaches. Why pay elite salaries for only good coaches?

You did exactly what you said would be "dumb."

You guys are too funny man. Obviously, Michigan is a superior program/athletic department/college to Iowa. I am not arguing that. I was talking about the current state of Michigan football. Iowa will always be at best 3rd behind OSU and Michigan. And Penn State as well.

That satisfaction will hopefully resume in the next season or two.

Iowa will always be irrelevant farm garbage unless they demand excellence. Almost any program in a major conference can be incredibly successful if they demand excellence and are willing to spend the money.

Because you're freaking IOWA man. That's what you have to do to avoid becoming Indiana or Illinois.

Don't buy that. With the right coach (which you could find for over 3 million a year), Iowa could be an elite program.

Florida was like that before Spurrier. Do you know why they are good now? Smart hires and demanding excellence... Iowa could do that. It would be more difficult, but it would be very possible.
