Tennessee under NCAA investigation over use of recruiting hostesses

I didn't read through every page so if this has been posted already sorry!

Barnhart says that UT could be in some serious trouble. He posted this on the ajc forums....

"I didn’t comment on the Tennessee situation in this morning’s blog because I wanted to wait and make some phone calls. But at this point I will say this. If what’s in Pete Thamel’s story turns out to be true, and he is a damn good reporter, then Tennessee will be in big trouble. There was a reason the NCAA eliminated “hostesses” several years ago. It was because of abuses like the ones described in the NYT story. Everybody knows the rule and there is no gray area in the rule.
Tennessee has to understand that the recruiting of the Brown kid from Wichita sent up all kinds of red flags. No one at the NCAA has told me this, but you have to believe they have been watching since that kid signed with Tennessee.
Stay tuned. This could get interesting."

There is a lot of question, into where the NYT got their info.

When did the NCAA eliminate hostesses? I have seen them at UT, and other schools for years.

As far as Bryce Brown, Im not sure where Tony B. is going with that. UT did nothing wrong in his recruitment, nor did Brown. The issue was with Butler, not his recruitment.

I would also like to ask him which "allegations" in Thamel's story he thinks are so damageing. Holding up a sign at the game and sending text messages don't sound like Cardinal sins to me, and they are the only allegations I read. The rest is sensational innuendo.

I hope nothing comes from it because I would love nothing more then the UT UA rivalary become what it once was...instead of one team down and one team up. Lets both be up at the same time!

Nothing will come out of this because they won't be able to prove anything. Tony Barnhart doesn't know what he is talking about. This has nothing to do with Lane Kiffin or any other coach.

He would have to be basing that assumption off more than just that article. And even at that, the school would have to be involved somehow.(AD/staff/somebody affiliated with the school)

IMPO I don't see how anything can come of this, where is the proof that the Football program sent these girls to a game. Could they have not went on their on free wheel. CLK has got us in the spotlight, they r gonna dig to try to find anything. But, I don't see how this can hold up to anything. It looks like we fans might be responsible for some of this, looking back at some older post. If LK wasn't the HC here you would have never heard anything about it. I am behind him 110%.

In 2004.

Because of the high-profile scandal/alleged rape involving the University of Colorado's football team, hostesses, and recruits in 2001 (which eventually resulted in the end of the football coach and the campus president), plus later allegations of impropriety at Arizona State and Oregon, the NCAA changed the regulations about hostesses back in '04.

No longer could 'host' groups be single-sex (i.e. all women) and they had to either be student-athletes themselves or they could be tour guides (etc) but in that case they had to provide tours and assistance to non-student athletes as well. NCAA rules say you cannot have a student group whose purpose is solely to recruit athletes, other than the student-athletes doing this themselves - those rules went into effect in the fall of 2004.

Bama got rid of its Bama Belles, Texas redid its group, etc.

See, for example:

"Sept. 9, 2004
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — From now on, Alabama football recruits will have to find their way around campus without a Bama Belle.

The university has dissolved the Bama Belles, the young women who guided recruits and their families during visits to Tuscaloosa. The change is part of sweeping recruiting changes imposed by the NCAA in the wake of high-profile scandals at Colorado and Miami.

Alecia Price, who oversaw the Bama Belles, told the nearly 50 members that their group would be dissolved late last month."

Have you attend any Bama games lately?
Do they have hostesses for the recruits on campus?

He contributed nothing new.

The NCAA is the same organization that gave us the BCS as a substitute for a playoff system. Their track record is a little shoddy.

Has Kiffin scheduled a presser yet to explain the UT side of the story, before the media gets out of hand with all this speculation?

I don't know if he has scheduled one yet, but I can tell you what he is going to say:

What do you think about the NCAA investigation of alleged recruiting violations?

"We are waiting until all the facts come in and everything is settled before we begin to plan our course of action in regards to the allegations. Until the investigation is over and the complete allegations have been presented to us, we will decline to comment on the investigation."

Is this a distraction for you and your team?

"We aren't focusing on this situation until all the information has come in. We have a bowl game on New Year's Eve against the number 11th ranked team in the nation, who has a great defense and special teams and also one of the best running backs in the country. Virginia Tech has our full attention."

He would have to be basing that assumption off more than just that article.

I don't know what he is basing it on, but that quote states he based it on the article.

I find it amazing that people who defend the NCAA policies say they are protecting athletes and here are their own goons knocking on doors and sticking their noses in places where it doesn't belong.

They won't allow playoffs; they hammer Michigan for 'excessive practice time;' and now, they act like this hostess thing with athletes is something new. This is an organization gone mad.

It's time for the NCAA to go. They're not looking out for athletes. If they were, they'd let them practice. They're not looking out for fans, if they were, we'd have a playoff. They're looking out for their own rogue interests. It's as simple as that.

Yea I attended 5 games this year and every recruit I saw was with other males.

Oh come on. An article about hostesses last year pointed out the not only does Alabama have females like everywhere except ND, they have more (200) than anyone else in the country.

I don't blame Bama for doing it since everyone else is but don't kid yourself...
