If only they'd implemented the celebration penalty earlier, such outrageous fan behavior might have been contained.

The same logic is implied with the hostess/NCAA situation. I'm sure to be a hostess, you have to be approved by the University and the University is responsible for making sure the hostesses follow the rules. If they don't, the NCAA steps in.

It's only an extension of company if the university funded their trip and they were acting in an official capacity.

Once the hostesses punch out for the day they are no longer on duty and once they are off campus they are just college kids free to do what they please.

NCAA Investigators visiting potential recruits for Tennesse or any other University is an attempt to alter their choices. The NCAA should be sued by the University for tampering in recruiting and trying to devert potential athletes from signing with Tennessee. The 300 pound Gorilla has over stepped its bounds this time.
This is simple retaliation toward Lane Kiffin and the University. It is TIME to EXPOSE the NCAA for what it really is.
The NCAA talks a good game about keeping recruiting fair but turn around and do this is totally WRONG>

Maybe we need to get new marketing firms to pay the rent for the recruits family to live in mansion a'la Reggie Bush? Apparently that is not a violation, at least not one worthy of the NCAA....

A google search of Lacy Pearl Epps comes up with 2 references. One at this url and one at a USCjr website that no longer works. This whole thing is a tempest in a teapot and is about keeping UT from winning at recruiting as well as winning on the field. To be this big a target and coming off a 7-5 season, we must be doing SOMETHING right if everybody is this scared of us and having to go to the NYTimes to get the message out there. Just another reason to never read or purchase a NYTimes again.

Unfortunately, that is subjective in the AA's eyes. If they wanted to nail a donor for leaving a facebook message, they could. If these girls are 'representatives of the university,' then their contact is restricted.

for a hostess... or school representative... to travel to and hold up signs and yell at them to come to UT... i would think the NCAA could view that as a clear violation of some kind... maybe secondary.... but if its standard practice... it's real bad.

He claims that he lived in the Byrnes county school district and that his best friend is an athletic supporter to the high school. According to this man who claims to be a UT fan the head coach there is not happy with UT about an incident that happened after a football game. According to him, the girls and the football players were at a hotel room paid for by Lane Kiffin and there was alcohol involved. Lattimore apparently was invited but did not want to join in on what was taking place. I found the story very hard to believe and he did preface it with the fact that his friend is a bit South Carolina fan. I wonder if the coach could be contacted to verify this story.

That's really what wrong with the process.

It's like calling a holding penalty in fear of the team scoring a TD. Corrupt refs do it to benefit their favored team. This is the AA's version of calling a 'holding infraction.'

I think you're wrong on that. Coaches are allowed to attend games during open recruiting periods. But other members of the university (not just students, but those who have some other representative capacity) are not allowed to do so. I don't know the severity of the penalty associated with this, but it's apparently against NCAA recruiting rules.

The argument on our side is that the hostesses were not acting in a representative capacity of the University. It does not matter whether or not UT officials knew about it. The University is required to educate all those who take part in recruiting on NCAA rules.

P.S. Lattimore is a douche.

Even that might be seen as more than just a "casual greeting", which is the only kind of contact allowed between university reps and prospects. Any representative of the University, "tertiary" or otherwise, is treated the same by the NCAA bylaws when it comes to in person, off campus contacts with prospective student athletes.

At best, this investigation fails to find proof that any further contact took place and slaps UT on the wrist. At worst, details of post-game frolicking or other more "intimate" activites will be uncovered, in which case...DUCK!!!!!

I'm not presuming anything; I based my statements on the allegations made in an obvious hatchet piece. It is you that is assuming that we have been running a whorehouse out of the athletic department, an assumption that, from what I have seen, is based on absolutely nothing.

I would also like for you to identify your source that defines the NCAA's view of a hostesses. I think you are making a big leap there by putting them in the same category as, say, coaches.

The NCAA is a joke, just watch Blindside and see how they went after Michael Oher. Heaven forbid that a family of Ole Miss fans take in a homeless kid and he chooses that school. They should be embarrassed that millions of Americans have watched that movie and see how they operate.

When Kiffin accused Meyer of "cheating" because he texted a recruit while on a trip to Knoxville.... Kiffin was chastised by Slive and it was reported that Meyer was not breaking any rules.

What he said! It's time we took the NCAA to court for leaking this information and sue them for damages right there in Knox County.
