60s-Steve Kiner
70s-Bobby Majors
80s-Dale Jones-Reggie White tie
90s-Dale Carter-Leonard Little tie
00s-John Henderson-Eric Berry tie but edge to Big John

hard to do a best ever so here's my by decade...EB is great but his star shines brighter because the incromptience surrounding him.

No, hes not the best "defensive" player yet, but I will say he is the possibly the best overall or most well rounded athlete I have ever seen play football for UT. His versatility and what he brings to the table is the best I've ever seen. He does more for our defense than any other player, and actually does more for or "offense" or scoring possibilities than even a lot of players on that side of the ball do themselves. I haven't even seen an offensive player that is a better open field runner than Berry much less a guy on defense.

Some of the older guys like me will remember Jack "Hacksaw" Reynolds, who started out as a fullback and became one of the best linebackers in NFL history.

From Wikipedia:

Reynolds earned his nickname in 1969 by cutting an abandoned 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air in half with a hacksaw after his previously unbeaten University of Tennessee team returned from an embarrassing 38-0 road loss to Ole Miss

By the way, Archie Manning was the QB for Ole Miss in that game.

I bet he sets the record this weekend and gets over 501 yards returned off of interceptions.

It's tough to put him in front of Kiner, Hacksaw, White, and Wilson. He's the best DB we've had by far and probably the best player we've had at any position since the late 90's. He will go down as an all time great of course.

Does anyone remember how long Reggie White contributed as a playmaker?

I love the guy and he was one of the beat NFL players ever, but he was only great for a very short period at UT.

Right on. Inducted into the College Hall of Fame but only All-American one year, UT record holder for sacks in a game, season, and career. Generally respected and admired by all of his peers and those who knew him. You're right Coach Mouth would never have wanted Reggie, because he actually accomplished something.

Apparently you were too stupid to understand the original question. Maybe you should hold White up beside Atkins and you'd look less retarded. The two lists of accolades are solid, but one absolutely dwarfs the other.

Your right Reggie was very talented but a lot of his development as a player happened after he graduated from college. Atkins though he played before my time was a freak of nature...back then nobody was 6'8'' with his atheleticism. He redefined the defensive end position.

Bill Bates should get an honorable mention as well. Not the most gifted, but he could knock a man down with some emphasis.

Tim Priest owns the record EB can break as all time interception leader at UT. Just sayin'.
