24 Hour rule and my thoughts on the game

I'll be adhering to the 24 hour rule this week. I have a few more hours to complain, then it is on to next week.

1. I know we were all disappointed with the running game. We still had over 100 yds on the ground. That is with eight men in the box all day long.

2. Jon is a head case. I think that UT fans would feel better psychologically if we never saw him on the field again. It wouldn't matter what Nick Stephens did. I'm afraid that every snap that Crompton takes from this point forward may feel like regression to the Big Orange faithful.

3. Last week when I saw the empty backfield on the goal line, I was encouraged by the new look Tennessee offense. However, I will be the first to admit (I may be the only one on the board) that thought running off tackle three plays was the way to go. Sure we could have stretched the field or run a pitch play but I thought that it was an assertion of will, and UCLA's line looked gassed. If Crompton had thrown an INT everybody on the board would be *****ing about that right now.

4. UCLA did not beat us on third down this year. That is a welcome change.

5. If we stay healthy we will be ok. I've not veered from my 8-4/7-5 prediction as the best case scenario for this team. I think that it hurts to lose one that UT should've won. However, with this defense I expect a lot of close ballgames this year. If they learn from their mistakes, they will pull a few out. I continue to think we will see improvement from week to week.

I didn't mind the four running plays at the goal line because quite frankly, if we're going to win a game, it's because of our RB's. However, I do think he should mixed up the running plays a bit. The toss sweep seemed like it was really working and with the outside speed of Hardesty and Brown I think it would've worked at the goal line.

Crompton needs to be benched. Period. Stephens may not be any better but Crompton has had his opportunities. Time to move on away from him now.

Good post Lex.

I agree with all of them. I just think that Kiffin gives the nod to JC this week, headed into the swamp. Stephens is not much better and throwing him to the gators in the swamp will not help our cause. If we are going to see a change, it will be after UF. If you dont see the change there, then Kiffin is probably going to ride JC to hell or high water.

If I may add....I was also a little disappointed in the line play. While it didn't cause the interceptions, our pass blocking was pretty poor. I also felt like with 2 opportunities inside the 3 yard line in a must score situation, they would have had a better push. Then again, o-line is not our strong point, so maybe I should relax my expectations.

I trust that Lane will make the change if and when he thinks he can win ballgames with Stephens. I think you are correct. Once Crompy is benched, his playing days are completely done (barring injury).

The OL wasn't sterling, but if Crompy completes a few more passes, you would have seen more running lanes. Six people simply cannot consistently block eight.

I have a feeling whoever starts next week will stay in the entire game, for good or bad.

I also think it doesn't much matter who plays with the way our O-Line will get dominated. Out of everything, that was the most concerning to me from yesterday.

I 100% agree with the running plays because of Crompton being a head case. It was obvious that Jon was well into meltdown mode after throwing the int. to start the half. I personally think Kiffin should make a move and start Nick at qb. I am not saying that he is any better than Crompton but mentally, Jonboy is fried. I can speak only for myself as a fan when I say that there is zero faith in Crompton. At this point no matter if he comes out looking like Peyton, I am always going to be waiting for the real Jon to rear his pitiful head.

Also, as a side note, the wound may be still too fresh, but at this point I find it hard to say with any conviction that the Vols beat anyone else besides Ohio this year as long as Crompton is under center.

I think Lane will adjust his playcalling no matter who winds up under center. The biggest disappointment for me was not that JC was still under center to start the second half, but rather that we came out throwing the ball down field rather than making safer throws to get Crompy in synch.

I personally don't think there is any way that Crompton is under center by the time we get to the meat of our SEC schedule.

I understand the notion, but I think it is premature. If we show any improvement from week to week I still stand behind by 7-5 prediction.

Like I said, the wound is fresh. Hope tends to stupidly build as the week moves on.:)

I think a lot of people on here would find the games more enjoyable this year if they temper expectations.

Your last sentence is prophetic. I guarantee we will have some posts before the week ends saying something along the lines of "I have a feeling, we are going to win on Saturday".

Mark it down.

We will never have a winning season with Crompton under center, Stevens cannot posibly be worse! I would feel better with one of the cheerleaders at guarterback!

Kiffin gave Crompton a shot on a rollout pass to the endzone earlier in the game. He had a wide open man and threw it into double coverage instead. He was lucky it wasn't pick #4. I agreed with running it right at them.

Kiff's in a tough spot.

Crompton's a mental wreck as the starting qb...if he's benched, he's donezo. I don't think he's tough enough to work hard and stay focused as a backup.

So, if anything happens to Stephens, we're looking at Lamaison or an even less-prepared Crompton.

The qb situation is awful...and, unfortunately, only the calendar can change that for the Vols.

Lex and Jaytrain, spot on. The reality is that we are absolutely terrible at the most important position on the field and there is nothing we can do about it right now. I know saturday hurt our fanbase, but I dont think it will hurt us in recruiting. The kids know we were 5-7 last year and that you dont get it turned around in one class. Saban was 6-6 his first year and it didnt hurt his recruiting. I think we lost one we should have won, now I fully expect to win one that everyone says we should lose.

Continuing to play Cromption could affect the bottom line of the "Volunteer Football Enterprise". I give thousands a year to VASF and drive hundreds of miles to each home game to be entertained. I have seen enough of the Crompton Show to know I will not be entertained when he plays against a half decent team. I'd rather steer that money elsewhere.

I couldn't agree more.

I wish the coaches had gone to the outside on some of the runs rather than straight up the middle and surprised that BB wasn't utilized on those kind of plays. Is he playing hurt?

Looking back in hindsight the large margin of victory over WKU made for issues with some people's expectations. This team is going to struggle with JC behind center with just about every team on our schedule from here on out.

I agree with Lex in that I think there is 0% chance JC is behind center during the meat of our SEC schedule.

I think one more bad game out of Crompton......and its coming this week, lane will be forced to play Stephens. At this point, unless Stephens is just god awful it would make sense for him to take his lumps this year and get ready for next season. He is more than likely going to be our starter anyway, get him started early and maybe they could make a half decent QB out of him. Crompton is done here, he's had his nine lives now its time to move on.
