Crompton had a great game, but...

What I liked was how we lined up 5 recivers down in the orange zone and those passes in the end zone were as good as any I've seen in a long time.I think he did a great job all day.

He's still a work in progress. But initial signs are that progress is at least positive.

I too looked for this and thought JC was much improved. Of the two INT's, the first one seemed to be the result of someone being in the wrong place. There were two receivers together and one led his defender right into the play. The second one was on JC and the OL.

Other than the batted balls, I thought he played very well.

BTW, he also threw some passes that were as good as any ever thrown by a UT QB. The TD to Warren was nothing short of perfect... you can't throw it any better than that.

Crompton looked prepared, checked down from primary receiver, and did not throw any worm burners or airmail any throws into the 1st row!

The next two weeks will be all we need to know how far he has come since last year.[/QUOTE

I agree, and I also noticed a big difference from last year. He wasnt running for his life. Last year he was only getting 3 seconds to make a throw. Every team we played was getting pressure on us. I think that the Oline was the most impressive difference from last year. I could have ran for 15 yards thrrough some of those gaping holes. I like what Ed O was saying about the line play, Come to the line angry and hit somebody, then get up and do it all over again. Hats off to the new coaching staff, because they are the real deal. UT swagger is back. And I think that we will not get beat in Florida as bad as everyone thinks, just wait and see.

I thought he did a great job but mostly because he had a lot of open people...What scares the heck out of me is that we had so many balls batted down or tipped...We need to fix that before this Saturday but other than that I thought he played well but still has to improve

The point is simple.....JC played much better than any game he has ever played at UT!

THAT is a good sign. Lets see what happens next week. I like the trend though.......

The Season is young.

The QB is working with a new system.

The Opponents were scrubs.

All in all, it was a good game to build the QB's confidence for the not so scrubby opponents to come.

Consider this. If you start out your season playing a good team, (ex. UT last year, UGA this year) and lose, the coach may be out of a job come next spring. The first game is important. Get a win under your belt and then go from there.

#1...If Kiffin had lost to a good team this year..his job was safe.

#2...last yr. Wyoming and No. Illinois were "scrubs" and UT lost to 1 and almost lost to the other. At least THIS team handled a team they should have handled. Look back to the UAB game a couple yrs ago.....17-10 vs. a team UT should have beaten by 30!

I don't drink UT "kool-Aid"...hate that phrase...and don't expect a 10-11 win season, but things look better than they have in several yrs.......I liked what I saw!

The Kiffin era is on! Can't get too excited just yet but the signs are there indicating a very nice change to the program. The backs all looked strong and will likely gain positive yardage on most teams. I was gladdened to see the play of the offensive line which needed to improve. And anyone, including any prospects, should be encouraged by the amount of playing time many freshmen received. Those freshmen produced also!

Is anyone else worried about how he stared down his receivers? Maybe he didn't have to look at the 2nd or 3rd receivers because the primary was open, but it appeared to me that he locked in on one receiver. That obviously won't work against a better defense. Thoughts?

I have to disagree… Especially one play where he pumped and stalled (WKU) safety, then threw to the other side. Great example of good QB play! :superman:

In the first quarter Crompton was staring down his receivers hard. After that, I have no idea what happened? Almost like someone told him to quit doing it and he did.

He also had all day to throw, he won't have that luxury much longer.

Credit Crompton with one INT, the other was the receiver fault. It was a bad throw and it would have hit the ground had the receiver not tried to catch it with one arm extended all the way. It was more of a hand-off at that point than a INT.

Big area of improvement: no worm burners or fans catching balls.

I also thought the pass to Hardesty (that he subsequently fumbled) was a terrible decision and a bad pass.

All in all, he had his errors in judgment that Kiffin, Chaney and Reaves will get on him for and Crompton still turned in a good game for his confidence... and the team got a huge win.

Yep, and then we'll really see if he's improved or not. FWIW, I did see things from him in that game that I didn't see all of last season. So he most definitely has improved. The question is, how much has he improved? A little or a lot?

A lot.

He played against equally bad defenses last year and looked lost. In the WKU game he made bad decisions... but he didn't look lost. He also didn't let the bad start in the 1st Quarter get him down and affect his play.

I think if we had the same 1st Quarter with last years staff Crompton could have easily melted down again. That seems like a minute detail... but it speaks volumes of his mental growth.

The Vols are making progress. But what else can you do after a season like last year's?

Also, I love the intensity and the fact that Kiffin is using starters on special teams - I saw several defensive starters on the kick-off team. I loved B.B. getting chewed out after running out of bounds - what a difference from the previous regime.:good!:
I thought he stared down the guy on the 1st INT he threw but after that he made his progressions nicely...JMO

I'm more worried about the picks. Doing that against a team like WKU does not bode well for performance against a defense like florida (among others)

The one INT he threw was definitely his fault for staring a hole through his WR, but the 2nd one was a tipped ball, even Kiffin said that wasn't his fault...I'm ready to see what he's going to do this Saturday against a decent opponent though

There's no way you blame him for that first pick. There were two receivers within 3 yards of each other. The guy who appeared to have run the wrong route led more defenders into the passing lane.

Tipped balls can belong to linemen or QB's.... Kiffin would know.

Much better. OL solid. Couple more games will bring it all into focus. Early game enthusiasm will be key for the youngsters and the whole team will feed off that. Good start, though.

Just looked at it again and that 1st pick was either a poorly designed play, the TE ran the wrong route, or JC threw it too early and didn't let the TE clear. It still appeared to me that the guy who got the pick was pulled over by the TE.

I saw him check off receivers several times. The deep pass to Hancock was a excellent example.

When I read the OP, I immediately thought of this exact pass. I watched it and thought "this is what we need to see every game." He needs to work on his progression and going from receiver to receiver. If he get's that under his belt, MONEY.

no way we can expect any qb to do it with every pass. Even on Sundays you will hear the commentators remark how an int was caused because the qb never took his eyes off the receiver.
