Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

We’ve pretty much had a year of mostly winning series as underdogs and losing series as favorites. But I do agree that there has still been improvement, less blown leads suddenly is nice. All in all, it was rocky for a bit but Josh has done a solid job rebounding this season. Can’t be too mad at it. I’m not sure we the bullpen to really make a serious run in Omaha if we get hot during regionals and supers, but hey just get there and you never know. No one on the planet had Ole Miss winning the natty in 22

Even the great TV only made one serious run in Omaha.

3 trips.

2021 - (0-2)
2023 - (1-2)
2024 - (4-1 NC)

David Wells pitches the Perfect Game

He achieved this feat with 11 strikeouts while dealing with a severe, "skull-rattling" hangover after partying until 5:30 A.M. the previous night.

Wells, an unapologetic partier, has often recounted that he went out the night before his Sunday afternoon start. He arrived at Yankee Stadium feeling half-drunk, severely sleep-deprived, and smelling of alcohol. His teammate, pitcher David Cone, noticed how bad of a shape he was in and advised him to hide in the manager's office so he wouldn't get in trouble before the game even started.

In the 5th inning, Wells went into the clubhouse to get water and overheard the broadcaster on TV, Michael Kay, stating "Boomer Wells has a perfect game." Panicked by the realization of what was happening, he ran back to the dugout and continued his routine of spitting on the dugout steps to stay focused.

Wells easily retired all 27 batters he faced. The game was sealed in the 9th inning when outfielder Paul O'Neill caught the final out off a fly ball from Twins batter Todd Walker.

Wells wore an authentic, game-used Babe Ruth hat that he had purchased for ($35,000) during a portion of the game. He also attended the same high school in San Diego (Point Loma High) as Don Larsen, who threw the only other perfect game in Yankees history (in the 1956 World Series).

I thought for sure after game 2 in the supers we’d win game 3 but ND handled the Vols and one of the best teams we’ve seen step on the diamond didn’t even make it to Omaha
I thought that was gonna be our best chance at a  natty. I didnt think we could put together a better team than that any time soon.

😂 NCAA fault! Not Vols fault for getting 5 hit, scoring 3 runs, and committing 2 errors with the season on the line!

Some highlights:

Jordan Beck 0-1, 2 BBs
Gilbert 0-4
Lipscomb 0-4
Ortega 0-3
Russell 0-4

Our 3-8 hitters went 1-19 in that game.
Notre Dame was a bad matchup for the Vols in that Super Regional. A Senior dominated team that had been together, kinda like the UCLA team this season.

My only major complaint is too much use of the shift when the staff's command is not good. You need a staff that can pitch to the analytics and a pitching coach that will call pitches that feed to the strengths of the pitchers to command the zone. Extremely inconsistent all season. That can be fine tuned in the offseason, it's fixable. Especially if they reload with better talent.

Promising start to the Elander era overall. Could have been much worse and even with the inconsistencies they are getting their shot at a natty!
Imagine if Tony V would have left him Anderson. Would have made a huge difference on the pitching staff. I wonder if Elander might look to upgrade the pitching staff a little? I am extremely happy with the job E has done. Especially given the fact he replaced the best baseball coach in school history and the best colegybqssball coach in the nation at the time.

Just a word for Tony Vitello who has kind of gone through it this year. I'll always like the guy. Tennessee had only reached the College World Series a handful of times historically (e.g., 1995, 2001, 2005) and hadn't made the NCAA Tournament since 2005 before CTV.

CTV posted a 341-131 overall record (.722 winning percentage) and 125-85 in SEC play (.595)...... 2018: 29-27 (best wins by a first-year UT coach)...... 2019: 40-21 - First NCAA Tournament since 2005...... 2020: 15-2 (COVID-shortened)...... 2021: 50-18 - College World Series appearance...... 2022: 57-9 - Program-record wins, dominant season...... 2023: 44-22 - Another CWS appearance...... 024: 60-13 - First national championship in program history (College World Series winners); first SEC team to win 60 games in a season.🥳...... 2025: 46-19 - Super Regional.

Multiple College World Series appearances (2021, 2023, 2024)...... Multiple SEC regular season and tournament titles...... Produced dozens of MLB players (52 drafted/signed, including 10 first-round picks)...... Consistently elite recruiting and player development...... He took over a program that hadn't been to the NCAA Tournament in over a decade and left it as one of the top baseball programs in the country, with sustained excellence, a national title, and a strong pipeline to the pros..... He handed Josh Elander the keys to an orange Lamborghini Aventador.

In the time I've been on this site, baseball was almost never talked about in the ole RFFT before CTV.

CBB playoffs with their short series is tailor made for sending the best teams home...plus the NCCorruptA Officials had a lot to do with that year. I know you don't like to go there...but I do.

I do think the program learned from it though, and it helped us win it finally.

TV is the man. Best coach in college baseball was between him and Jay Johnson.

That series loss to ND has zero to do with NCAA not like Vols antics.

ND jumped all over Vol pitching game 1.

Vols got shut down with the season on the line in game 3. Which happens in baseball. Just unfortunately how it played out that year.

Now just bring back the old pan recipe and we’re cooking with grease
Correct. Renovations and a throw-back ambience aren't the issue. Pizza Huts's problem is the same as most fast-food franchises. Decades of cost-cutting using cheaper and cheaper ingredients leading to poor tasting food.
