Why is everyone sleeping on our incoming freshmen?

Yeah he sleeping on them! They are actually very talented and mature just like the freshman this past season!

Well, that's the problem today w recruiting HS players. If they are 1+Done types, extremely rare, then you have nothing to lose except the NIL investment. Bring them and if they are legit, you can have a title run. If not, then your probably still decent. We used to whine about the handful of these and how they were destroying cbb. Now, they are actually the stable ones!

If FR are good but not 1+done (#15-100 rated) or "projects" (#101-200) then they are now a real problem. Give them PT and a yr of disciplined coaching and some are going to shine (Evans/Brown/Carr etc) at least enough to raise their trade stock. Remember all players are free agents now If they perform and show potential then we'll have to battle the market for their services next season. Plus, they are normally only serviceable as FR and rarely elite.

Therefore, the recruiting school signs them, develops them, invests energy in them, and honestly plays them for developmental reasons as much as production reasons. Boom, then after all the investment, they are off to a competitor the next season, where the development blooms and they actually are a productive or possibly a dominant player. So, the next two to four or three to four years of their career, they are helping win games and leading other competitors to victory. While all we got was a developmental player below average normally and had to put in a lot of work to do so.

I believe that CRB knew Dave was going to open the checkbook this year and decided he wasn't ponying up big money to keep "average" players, so he let some walk away, unless he could get them at or below market. Rick moved into the power position, and became the second or third guy to bring them in after someone else did the development and proved them at the D1 level or saw them excel at the mid major level.

I don't like it at all, but it's the route that I believe most winners are going to take going forward in the current climate. Michigan was head and shoulders better than everyone this year. AZ was close and Duke. There are strategic reasons for that.

Freshmen can have very good roles for even championship teams. McKinney averaged 10 points per game for Michigan. He had 17 points against Bama and 16 points against Arizona in the tournament. Arizona was top 5 all year and had several freshmen.

There are roles for them even on veteran teams, and they are cheaper. Brown and Evans contributed more than I expected to start the year. Most freshmen that Barnes wants back will come back. I think there was more to Evans leaving than just money.

I'd get used to it if I were you. HS recruiting will be less and less of a priority moving forward. At least until changes to the system are made, which may never happen. This is the new normal.

I'm going to take this in a different direction.
I'm going to suggest that Barnes & company do the Michigan model.
When you're up by 30 and killing them, you play all the way down the roster!
There's absolutely no need to leave your starters/stars in the game ... when you are up big. You get them all some time on the floor and get video to help them develop.
I am thinking that is what we would ALL like to see!!!

Isn't Henderson already out for the coming season? Thought I read he had surgery and was on the shelf. Doubt we see him develop here. Destined for the portal I suspect.

More so than any year I can recall under Barnes, our freshman got good minutes and often meaningful minutes while the game was still in question vs mop up duty when things aren’t the same. It’ll be interesting to see if that continues his year as it might’ve been mostly out of need last year.

I think that came from Basilio…not sure I’d take that to the bank…I don’t doubt he could miss some of the season…but not sure all is accurate…

Thread title sounds like Lame Kiffin is back on campus helping Barnes with recruiting. He brought Lacy with him to make signs to take to the recruits high school games.

Most of he best players in America this year were freshmen. Peterson, Boozer, Wilson, Ament, Acuff, Dybantsa, Wagler, Flemings, Brown, Jr. at Louisville, Burries, Cenac…and that’s not counting guys who were solid contributors to their teams like Evans and Brown were for Tennessee. There were plenty of those guys.

If you think freshmen being important to a team’s success is “the exception,” you didn’t see much college basketball this past season.

Assuming is never good, but if ZZ tears his ACL and has surgery march 13, then plays in a game first week of November, i think Henderson will definitely be available by December

Agree, I really see Troy Henderson turning into a Jordan gainey type of
Player , perhaps a little better perimeter shooter

The best competition our freshman are going to get this year is in practice when they have to play against all these new portal additions. They will get a chance to play enough as I think we are going to stomp a bunch of teams next year if we push tempo. During Knecht's year our tempo was ranked 80th. I hope and pray we are in the top 30 for adjusted tempo with this new group next year. I like all our freshman, but in tight games you would think our 8-man rotation will be set. If the frosh play consistently, all our projected "best" players would be getting under 30 minutes per game. I doubt that will occur in games in less we are up big.

That’s fair. But I didn’t expect Dewayne Brown or even Evans to get the minutes they did. It would be nice if we can get some consistent play out of one of the freshman front court players.

If he weren’t going to be available this year, I don’t know why we would have talked to him back out of leaving. That would mean he’s just using our resources to recover from the surgery, while getting paid by UT, just so he can go back in the portal next year when he’s healthy. I have to think the coaches believe he will be available this season or they would have just let him go.
