SportsCenter 2001 after Tennessee/Florida

Travis Stephen was a beast that day. One of the biggest wins in history followed by one of our most disappointing losses in our history quite the turnaround of emotions in one week. It was really satisfying though that Spurrier’s last home game in the swamp as HC will always be a loss to Tennessee.

Were any of you there?
Wouidve love to been there but my dad waited to see if we won so he got tickets to the SEC title game so we went to that game instead unfortunately. i was 22 back then now almost 47 hard to believe it’s been 25 years nearly since that game. i do think not playing the game till December really benefited us.

That game was the last great Tennessee moment before 2022's Alabama streak ender. There were other great moments since the national title season, but none so great as those two.

This video brings back all those memories. What a game. Like it was yesterday. Fulmer telling Witten it was okay after the dropped pass. Casey Clausen running for his life. Travis Stephens pimp-slapping the entire Florida defense. "And he amplifies that statement by BREAKING Gus Scott's tackle -- and HERE GOES STEPHENS!"

And not least of all, John Chavis gave not a single damn game. He got a lot of crap over the years for his prevent defense stuff, but him bringing out that "prowler" junk defense on that night was absolutely stupendous. Chief at his finest. Sure, it helped that it was being anchored by Henderson and Haynesworth (what I wouldn't give for that pair on the DL again), but what a gutsy scheme. When Spurrier flipped that headset off with that stinkface expression ... thank you for that, Chief.

And once again, thank for the pregame picks, ESPN College Gameday. Jackasses. That day at least ... well, and many others, but definitely that one.

First full season I remember. The Georgia loss killed me as a little kid. Guess my dad started to notice my love for UT that year and got us SEC championship tickets. Was lucky enough my fist game ever was the rise of Saban and the fall of us

Some observations:

Considering the quality of the opposition , the opposing coach and on the road one of the 10 greatest wins in Vols history.

Final score was no indication of how bad we beat down the Gators. Except for 2 horrible calls by Stave Shaw the final should have been 48-32 instead of 34-32. One was o n the clip shown where they called Grossman down, other was when Grossman got turned around and threw the ball backwards which should have been a fumble but they called another incomplete pass. Surprising because I always thought Shaw was one of the best head referees ever. Just had a bad day.

Never been a big Randy Sanders fan but once again one of the best game plans and execution ever in Vol history.

Just a shame what happened the next week but still doesn't take away from the magnitude of this victory

Steve Shaw wasn’t the referee, it was Al Ford.

Cool clip. Things have changed a bit in the last 25 years.

It never gets old watching Stephens run over the Florida defenders that day. He was like a dog that was fed hot sauce.

That Eddie Moore hit would be a penalty today. It's kind of a shame when you think how history would be changed if they had some of today's rules in place then.
