Sucks for him that the surgeon's "plug" procedure is frowned upon by NFL doctors.

I am a fan of McCoy, but only a small percentage of defensive players ever contribute long term after ACL procedures. I can't even find reference to the bone plug procedure and NFL athletes. His likelihood of being a factor for the Raiders looks small. I was hoping he would be drafted, but the 1st rd predictions were not realistic; and that was before we knew anything about a bone plug.
This story is a testament to Heupel's aversion to injury updates.

I think you'll not find "bone plug" online but you'll find plenty of references to "bone patellar tendon bone" (BTB or other variations) procedures which involves what is being called a "bone plug" in this discussion.

It’s not. This is autograft (taken from patient), allograft or synthetic placed to try to repair a defect in the articular surface/cartilage. Defect likely caused when he tore his acl as an acute event or can be from wear and tear.
Expectations are the body absorbs it and no defect is detectable when healed up.

It’s not frowned upon. There’s no other way to repair. The only variance is choice of said plug. The fear from that side is the word “arthritis” is associated with chondral defects.

I’m glad he’s a Raider 🏴‍☠️ and hope he has as great a career as possible, however medical reality points to shorter rather than longer career unfortunately. I think if he can 3-4 years or more would be an huge success!

I thought the autograft WAS the BTB which is bone, a piece of harvested cartilage, bone which is inserted in drilled holes?

I thought the plug is the bone portion, essentially "plugging" the holes drilled to stabilize the harvested tendon.

Btb is part of the acl repair process as surgeons reattach a new acl through a tunnel drilled for the bony part.
The bone plug aspect is basically trying to fill a divot/defect in the articular surface caused by trauma or wear and tear.

So it's a separate hole or "chip repair" not necessarily related to the ACL tear/repair itself. Thx.

McCoy apparently had an ACL + defect/further injury to repair. That makes more sense to me that there might be questions and a longer "field ready" wait. Thx, again.

Do they still do a patella tendon graph for an ACL surgery? The former surgeon for the football team (Dr. Youmans) actually fixed my right knee ACL many years ago and it works like a charm still. No clue if there’s a plug or what not in there.

I had no cartilage damage though.
