New Commit Braedan Lue

Not sure about him as a third post . If he was your fourth you feel better. I'm just not enamoured with this part of the roster right now. Your essentially hoping that Brown takes a huge leap in year two. Possible but he wasn't very good down the stretch this year.
A) Brown will make a jump in improvement. He was just a freshman. Players always improve under Barnes, especially from freshman to sophomore year.
B) I like what Lue gives us. For starters, he is another rim protector. But on offense, he actually has some game. He can finish around the rim and can also step out and hit a jumper. Basically, he gives you everything Cade did, plus some offense that Cade can’t provide.

Lue looks like a very athletic guy for his size, which means he’s able to switch on defense and guard multiple positions, which is needed in Barnes’ defense. I think that is true of Rubin too.

I remember last year the consensus was how great we felt with JP, Felix, Carey and Brown. Of those 4, Felix was the only one with size where that attribute seemed to matter. Carey had a couple good games. For JP being 6’11 245, he reminded me of Kyle Alexander in the paint for the most part. Dewayne brown is someone to be excited about.

How many games did our size really matter? Hell Syracuse was about the smallest team we played and they beat us. Our “bigs” weren’t really impactful in the way Michigan’s giant was. Some other poster pointed how how important the wingspan is, which all three of Rubin, Lue and Brown have. I jusr think we’re a little enamored with “6’11+” in order to have a good center. I’d rather have 3-4 guys in that role that can move and shoot rather than someone who’s 2 inches taller and misses bunnies like it’s his job

I like Lue, but not as a 5. If this is our post, then fans need not be surprised when we are dominated in the paint by a big we can't stop because we don't matchup. It's happened more than with just Edey. The Michigan big that transferred to Kansas ate our lunch too. Perhaps strong 1 - 4 play can overcome this but it would be nice to have another intimidator down low. I say this realizing Barnes has done a nice job in the portal.

I feel like there are only 1-2 guys a year in the post with games like Edey or Dickerson though. You can’t plan around stopping two players nationally who aren’t in your conference

I think the plan is that he’s a 4th post, maybe even 5th if you add in Haralson. He’s an above average defender, an a potentially above average offensive player, and he was affordable, I like the add.

I’m assuming we are planning to go sort of small ball with Haralson at the 4 as our primary lineup. If we do that, then yeah Lue is no higher than 4th as a post. If he falls behind a freshman, then he’s 5th, and considering we only had 4 posts this past year after Cade went down, it seems fine to me.

It’ll depend on Juke, if you miss there Haralson becomes your 3, but he gives you that versatility, we’ll see what happens. Big thing is I think they still want to add more of a true 5.

I like Lue's versatility. His role will be defined at UT. Setting screens, pick and roll, can handle well enough on straight lines, has ability to switch defensively, decent shot blocker and will be asked to focus on rebounding. Need guys like this. Definitely an SEC athlete at 6'9 and 235 and he is very mobile and a quick leaper. Expect him to get bigger under our strength and conditioning program. As a 4 can be used to play on perimeter and crash to rim on the baseline which could keep court open for our scorers. Probably an underrated portal find. Has some ability to score but that won't be his primary need.

As I’ve said before…2 years ago, Houston was 1 possession from NC with a frontcourt that didn’t top 6’8”. And it was a good frontcourt.
