2026 Vols Transfer Portal Thread

Can someone explain the portal closing, yet able to secure players later? Is it, you can contact them til the deadline then if they commit later is if only the player reaches out? No more teams contacting players?
The deadline is just for a player to enter the portal. You can communicate with them until they choose a team. The player can enter and then decide to join a team in the summer.

Nate averaged 16.7ppg on 45.2%efg, Ames averaged 16.9ppg on 52.7%efg…I don’t think it’s a crazy take.
Worst bTo take, ever, imo. Last year's Nate was still better for last year's Vols, than Ames would have been. Now, if Nate comes back he destroys whatever Ames does for this year's team and Dau Dai will put up numbers.

Anyway, I'm ecstatic about next year's team, just finish it with Juke.

Of course, bringing back Nate might be even better

You might wanna do yourself a favor and not worry so much about it.
Just trying to save some people some heartache. The ones throwing the biggest fits and spiraling out of control are the fools who just believe anything they read. The smallest amount of a BS detector would prevent most of the insufferable freak outs when something doesn’t happen.

Let people decide for themselves. We know a couple who do get legit info.

Maybe I’m reading the hypothetical wrong…I’m looking at it last year Nate vs. this year Ames, not Ames on last years team. I think Ames could be a 15-16ppg guy but at a much more efficient level than what Nate was last year.

We won’t go 6-6,7-5 in football either. Why are people fans of teams and constantly negative
Because we expect excellence to match the investment. Going into year 6 with our QB issues and staring 6-6 or 7-5 in the face with how we have recruited the high school ranks and won in a couple of those years is frustrating. If you want to pretend believe 10-2 is on the horizon for 2026, then I want to sell you things.

Vegas has our total in the 6 to 7 win range. I guess you'll be betting heavy on the over.

The problem is - and I agree with your analysis - is that as hard as people say next years schedule is, 2027 looks even worse to me.

Realized I never posted it lol…

I smell what you are cooking, kinda. But, Nate gave you a lot more than Ames with boards and blocks. But, you have to consider what they did for their team or could do, to have perspective, imo. Either way, Ament > Ames

No doubt Nate is the more talented player, at the same time Grant wasn’t nearly as talented as many guys, but he was a hell of a college player.

Obviously we aren’t done, but my take on 5/5…

Gillespie = Hill
Boswell < Lundblade
Ament < Ames
Estrella < Haralson
Okpara > Rubin

If you look at both guys stats prior to coming to Tennessee Hill & Gillespie are quite similar, Hill has a bit more efficient scoring punch, Gillespie a bit better facilitator.

Lundblade should be better than Boswell.

Ames vs. Ament…sure, Ament is a lottery pick, but we’re talking about the 1 season to CBB at Tennessee. Ames has shown an ability to score at a consistent level that Ament wasn’t able to show in his 1 year.

Haralson vs. Estrella…again, we’re talking for the 1 year, maybe Estrella kills it at Michigan, potential is there, but what we got from Estrella as a 3rd year player wasn’t close to what Haralson gave ND as a freshman.

Okpara vs. Rubin (or Brown)…offensively I don’t think you see much difference, but defensively, especially from a perimeter defense standpoint, Okpara was elite and I don’t know that I can assume anyone can do that until seeing it.
I was watching my kid play soccer and was going to post my version of the “last year vs this year” comparison, but unfortunately bTo beat me to it.

Ames hit 100 FT, 147 2fg, and 56 3fg last year. The list of vols to do that in the past 25 years is pretty short:

1. Dalton Knecht.

That’s it, that’s the list.

Hill is pretty similar to Gillespie.

Lundblade (which my phone wants to correct to “landlady”) is similar to Lanier both in style and efficiency.

Haralson is sort of similar to Tyler smith.

Now, what will they be like on defense? That’s the question. But offensively, we’ve essentially signed a starting lineup comparable to:

Gillespie
Lanier
Knecht
Tyler smith
Rubin (I have no comparison here)

I'd take either/both LSU guys in a heartbeat...I feel like they each got way under utilized and could be a lot more productive. Like Hastings based on his tape and his former HC being on staff and knowing what he's capable of. Obviously landing Diop or Thiam would be crazy, but they're getting a lot of attention and could be a bidding war situation.

Likely not, but that could be outweighed by a more efficient scoring effort
I like where your heart is with this one, but I don’t think this team will be short on scorers. I’d take the last Ament season over Ames just for the help rim protection and length at the perimeter.

Contrary to popular belief funds aren’t unlimited, and we don’t “overspend” typically either…if you want to be able to land Juke going after Diop/Thiam/Yessoufou etc isn’t going to happen. We have scorers out the ass, especially if you add Juke, you don’t need a ball dominant big, you need a big that can get putback dunks, rebound, and defend. This is where the whole money ball concept comes in, our scouting department combs through finding the best value big men that can do those things, you start adding in offense and the prices go up, but again, we don’t need that.

There’s simply zero chance Ames has the defensive impact of Ament.
True but there’s a good chance the rest of the lineup can give us a better defensive squad.

Gillespie was a guy we literally had to hide on defense. Estrella/carey were too slow against wings (which is half the league with the stretch 4 lineups, and the whole league when we switch on screens). It was a game of “our super tall 3 can maybe make up for the fact that we can’t stay in front of our guy at 2 of the 5 positions.”
