The 2001 SECCG didn't cost Tennessee a shot at the nattie - not spying the backup QB in the 2001 SECCG, however, did. Good ol' Mustang - *EDIT* - whatever we did to avoid defending LSU's offense in the second half.

That said, I can agree that the SECCG doesn't mean diddly squat now. No one cares about conference championships. They don't matter. Yet another thing this new era has killed.

It would’ve also been neat if we would’ve not turned it over twice and scored 3 points after halftime.

Along those lines, each of us pays some lower conference team to come to town to be a sacrificial lamb so as to build the 6 win bowl eligible resume, you know, just in case.

Now that bowls other than the playoff-involved ones are UTTERLY IRRELEVANT, let's just play 10 conference games.

The only way it could help is if you had a team that was a solid playoff entry, like a 12-0 UGA, and a team with otherwise no chance, say, a 9-3 Tennessee. Even if UGA loses in the SECG, they are in. The game gives Tennessee a chance to take a spot from a Tulane.

We would have been in the National Championship game, and likely won, if not for the 2001 SECCG. Mustang had nothing to do with it (unsure if that's a reference to just Chavis or the dreaded prevent defense we ran in 4th quarters). The issue was we knocked out so many starters on LSU's team in the 1st quarter that they essentially birthed the modernized, collegiate version of the read option with Matty Mauk of all people. Neither Chavis, nor anyone else knew how to stop the option that particular day for some reason. Agreed on the meaninglessness of the current championship game.

The Mustang was Chavis's nickname for his patented 3rd and long "give a 10-15 yard cushion and keep everything in front of you no matter what" defense. I'm oversimplifying the concept for comedy's sake, but it was well known in both fan and coaching circles. If you ever found yourself watching a Tennessee game in the 90s/00s and having a "wait where are all the cornerbacks, I don't see them on the screen!?" moment of panic- that was the Mustang. Put 3 or 4 on the line, drop everyone, and see if the other team could complete passes.

When we start playing in this game I give closer thought. Right now its actually better for UT to have a top SEC team get an additional loss.

Haven't missed a game since the early 80's. Mustang wasn't the issue in the 2001 game. Hence my post. I just wasnt' sure if you were calling Chavis mustang or mocking the late game dime package itself. Also, I'd remind you Grant, Carter and Berry could makeup for those corners taking risks. Heck, that's how DGOOD got drafted in the first round (jumping those Peter Warrick routes). You not wrong about the MUSTANG failures. Just that those failures were part of the 2001 game you reference. That's all.

It's a crappy assignment for UGA in this scenario. I think the championship game format makes it less likely a contender from the SEC wins the national championship. I don't care if the other conferences have one or not. It's wearing players down and making injuries more likely in both the championship and playoff games.

It really looked like lazy coaching.

I had a graduate classes with Antonio Gaines. He is a great guy and works with special needs students. I asked him about a couple of things. When I mentioned the Mustang defense he winced and said it wasn't like that. He said the players were fine with the 3rd down and prevent defenses called. They just didn't make plays.

I agree with you there. In fact, its an incentive for UGA to hold back its top players, to keep them healthy for playoffs.

“Mustang” turned into a redneck slur in the early 2000s lol. All it really was, was a heavy Dime personnel package, but fans blamed it for every 3rd down conversion.

I think you’re exactly right though. Just our luck that we knock out the starting QB and RB and Matt Mauk starts running around in circles.

I'll admit I didn't really 1-to-1 the Mustang with that game, and considering we only used it when we were ahead and protecting leads, it certainly wouldn't have fit the second half. I haven't watched the second half in over a decade because I don't hate myself. What I mostly remember is a lot of overpursuit and guys taking themselves out of the rush, and Mauck just thanking them for their service and running up the middle in crucial situations. I may be misremembering but I feel like our DEs ended up getting too deep behind plays too often. Between than and knocking out Toefield and getting Davis as a reward, well, like I said, haven't watched in a long, long time.

I think that the two last place teams need to complete in the Losers bowl.

Keep the television $ while Atlanta gets some yearly Mississippi State & Kentucky revenue

Make it a play-in game for the 4th-5th teams in the SEC standings, winner get's into the playoffs.

It saved us from getting a beatdown from Miami in 2001 is what it did. Of all the years we have been in the hunt in my half century of Voldom, there are 2 years that I never pine over what might have been natty-wise. 1995 and 2001. 1995 Nebraska is the greatest CFB team of my lifetime and 2001 Miami had the most NFL draft picks on any CFB roster ever. We weren't beating either so it was best someone else (especially Florida) got to take the beating instead and we got to end the season on a high note.

After divisions were eliminated then there is no reason for the SEC title game to exist and i’m not just saying that since Tennesssee hasn’t been in it since 2007.

We could've beaten Miami in 2001, NO ONE was beating Nebraska in 1995

We lost for only two reasons:

1) Our staff and players failing to account for QB sneak after being up 17-7
2) Two crucial turnovers by our offense late in the game
