Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2026-27

I don't know if his numbers are accurate, but I suppose it's possible. With CKC only making $1m/year it seems UT is spending heavy money on players.
I think you may have unintentionally co-mingled bucks from three different buckets:

—budgeted funds, from which coaches' salaries, travel, etc are paid.
House settlement (maximum disbursement per school=$20.5 million) revenue sharing, from which players are paid.
—NIL payments to players for “services” off court.

These are not interchangeable.

I was only referring to total revenue spent on a sport from a University, not outside NIL funds.

OK. Still, money spent to pay a coach is not available to pay a studennt. Or the reverse…

ETA- if the creative accounting department gets involved, some revenue share funds could, maybe, be directed to staff compensation, but a funds flow in the other durection would arouse the ire of the NCAA.

Interesting.

Great hire for the Wildcats. Berube definitely has the coaching chops, the question is whether she will be able to go head-to-head with the big boys in recruiting. She did a creditable job of attracting quality players (who were also able to meet fairly stringent academic requirements) to Princeton but competing in the B1G is an entirely different challenge to playing in the Ivy League. If Berube can energize alumni support along with securing reasonable backing from the athletic department, I suspect that she can turn the Wildcats around much like Shea Ralph did with the 'dores.

That was the point. Paying a coach $1m vs $3-4m frees up some cash.

If the chart is correct, it appears UT spends close to $10m a year on WBB. Only $1m of that is/was dedicated to the HC. I’m not sure where the confusion is coming from, I made it quite clear from the start.

My point was the exact opposite of yours.

Trying to be open minded, and striving to find circumstances in which paying a coach less “frees up some cash” to direct to “student/athlete/quasi-employee/mercenaries”, I think there is a way you may be correct. But it requires some calisthenics, a.k.a., stretching.

First, we need to assume that GAAP and university accounting management wave a friendly hello when they meet, from a distance. Next, assume that the whole $20.5 million has not yet been divvied up, that there is some portion of that magic number as yet unallocated to a sport. (Or….pssst! the entire 20.5 has been allocated, and the numbers submitted to the NCAA will magically omit—ahh, so sorry, minimal human error, Ms. Auditor—the incremental funds flow to the lady hoopsters.).

The Athletic Department, paragons of virtue and upstanding devotees of rigorous arithmetic, are doing their seventh iteration of the annual budget.

AD- D_____italltoh__l! We keep getting outbid by those (name of animal mascot of bitter rival, plural)_____! Find me some more money for our girls young ladies on the basketball team.

Accountant, pushing grren eyeshade up a tad- Yessir! That mid majory coach you want to hire? If you cut the offer by X, and, let’s see, X divided by fifteen is Y, hmm. you could increase the per/player revenue share by Y! Yeah, that’ll work!

AD- Brilliant my man! Take an early lunch.

It’s definitely going to be a tall task for her, but if she can be successful at NW and build that program up to be a serious contender in the B1G, it’ll be extremely impressive.

Before being at Princeton she had a great 17-year run at D3 Tufts. 80% win percentage, 4 Final Fours and 2 national championship appearances. She also won the Pat Summitt award for coach of the year in D3. Like Princeton, a very high academic school. Whether she’ll make the grade at Northwestern isn’t a sure thing but I think she’s got as good a chance of winning there as anyone else available.

Wasn't sure where to dump this. some interesting thoughts on title IX and on neutral site games.
Common sense viewpoints. He doesn’t pull punches. More interesting than the usual coachspeak mush.

The good news? Immediately after House v. NCAA was handed down, Title IX suits were filed.

Connecticut at -250 to win Championship, next best odds are UCLA at +450.

Just give Connecticut the trophy, every other team shouldn't even show up ...

No team is ever infallible.
If a team defeats Connecticut this season it will be as big a upset as Villanova defeating Georgetown in 1985 NCAA Mens Championship game....yea I'm that old...

It would take a nearly perfect game by opposing team and for Connecticut to be playing their C game on that day...
