The Collapse of Kentucky basketball

Pope is a dead man walking there. No way he survives there, he’s in over his head. I still can’t believe they hired this guy with his resume. The AD should be run out of Lexington starting tomorrow.

He is retiring at the end of the academic year with a 2M$ golden parachute and 10 season tix for life, and the fanbase is furious that the university let that happen. Not one but 2 lifetime contracts.

Kentucky embraced the trend of one-and-done, and no program can sustain that much turnover from year to year. There simply is no culture and team chemistry. Plus, the players are simply out to pad their draft stock, not do what’s best for the team. Short-term gain for long-term pain.

Billy Gillespie did too. That's one I'll never figure out.

Yep, that one was a head scratcher. For all the great Pearl did here, he sucked against Kentucky and went 1-3 against Gillespie including that terrible beatdown we took at home where Meeks went off on us. UK actually kicked our axes both times that year but that was also Pearl's worst team not counting his last one for obvious reasons.

Barnes is kinda doing the same thing against Pope, though he did win the important one in the S16 last season.

I don't think that's their problem. UK's best teams under Cal were where he embraced one-and-done the most. With the Portal almost every team with a few exceptions (like Mich St) are doing one-and-done to a degree.

All high level programs will sustain that turnover y2y now with the portal.

Our 2 best offensive players are first year guys in Ament and Gillespie. As were the last 2 seasons’ in Knecht and Lanier.

I agree. The problem is an inexperienced coach, a p'd off fanbase, and out of touch administration. Makes for unhappy times. Admin is about to change though. Pope is shuffling around his staff. May turn things around yet

Ky built up all these win total numbers FF, E8s and all the BS numbers they like to throw around and cling to for self worth. Them and about 10 other schools were paying players and the rest didn’t give a s**t about basketball. In the NIL world they have retreated back to the hole they belong in.

I think their issues are pretty simple. The program had been stale for years under Cal. He coasted after getting that "lifetime contract," which is 100% on Mitch Barnhart.

I don't think Pope is all that great of a coach, but his hire was more of a product of previous bad decisions as opposed to him being to blame himself.

And Pope was what, the 5th or 6th choice? I believe they were turned down several times and finally tried to save face by bringing in an ex-player.
