The Official #1 Tennessee Lady Vols Softball @ #5 Florida Series Thread (3/20 6PM ET SECN+) (3/21 1PM ET SECN+) (3/22 Noon ET ESPN2)

Couldn't get the ball down, couldn't hit it consistently hard during this series. Need to fix that.
But the losses were really from errors and wild pitches. Need to fix that even more.
Might have just played the toughest SEC team we'll face this year
8 of the 9 Florida runs were earned. The only one due to error (unearned) was 1 of the 5 yesterday, which still would've been a loss. Yes, 4 errors aren't good, but they weren't the reason for this series loss.

The last two series have really exposed our offense. Yes we've played against good pitchers but the lack of a plan at the plate is worrisome going forward.
Agreed our offense needs to score more but we could have won all three games without errors, walks, and wild pitches. That’s really where we struggled this weekend. Losing to Florida at Florida isn’t a big deal. They are one of the best teams in the country. We took one. As long as your not swept on the road and win all the home series you will be good in the SEC.

Pitchers can't keep the ball in the park all of the sudden.

TBH we were very lucky to win game 1.

We clean up the things you mentioned and I think we should be ok. Hopefully, we can sweep most of the SEC schedule we have remaining. It looks favorable with what I am seeing as standings are now.

The goal is to win the SEC. I'm thankful we have an easy SEC schedule this year, outside of Florida and Alabama (who has better pitching than Florida). We miss Texas, OU, Texas A&M, Georgia and Arkansas.

Florida is one of the best offenses in the country. I kinda expected them to hit us some. You just can’t allow walks and errors before big hits which we did.

I definitely expected a couple but I didn't expect to give up four.

WTBS, hitting cost us the series, not pitching.

Wild pitches are earned runs... but they "ain't good plays"

maybe we need some loses to get back to reality. we don’t need to peak in february to march. we need to peak in the late season. a tough weekend, but florida is a WCWS team and with a regular KP we prob win these games. need her to get healthy and out of this headspace. need our offense to be better. we had the hits today, just didn’t score.
I have no issues losing one for every 10 wins, it’s a good reset and reminder of doing the little things right against a team like FL.

Well at least he was consistent and didn't give that strike

Technological advances what they are, there is really no reason to have humans calling strikes/balls.
I respectively disagree. When we take the people out of the game, machine calling balls and strikes, then it changes the game fundamentally from the game played and statistics become meaningless. It’s one of the reasons MLB still uses wooden bats. How do compare players from the past to the present if one uses a wooden bats versus using a metal bat for example? You can’t, because it changes the game to much imo. If we get machines calling bslls and strikes, why can’t we have a machine stroll up to the plate and pinch hit or pitch as well? Keep the human portion of the game human. Just understand after a long hot day and the final inning comes up the strike zone gets wide open as the imps are thinking about a cold beer. That kind of stuff is just part of the game.

yeh, that got me wondering if she really understands the concept of situational hitting -- just needed a fly ball
How many t times while coaching did I justvwant a ground ball or pop up fly anywhere!?!?!? Just let em hit it! LOL

Offense had a rough weekend but we’re going to be fine. Not worried one bit. This conference is brutal and will test you every weekend. Karlyn and Erin are not 100% either.

Sucks to lose a series but, as you said, the conference is a gauntlet. This was #8 at their place, with a hobbled KP. I'm fine with relinquishing #1 knowing that this team has a chance of getting to full strength come mid-May.

It astonishes me that most softball/baseball fans — but particularly softball since there’s soooooo very little time between when the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand and it’s arrival to the batter — that batters are EVER trying to do more than just make connection with their bat to the ball. Outside of the bunt, probably only 1 batter out of 150 is truly able to determine successfully, in the literal split-second she has, to 1. Find the ball, 2. Decide to swing, 3. Tell her brain which direction she needs to swing in order to hit it the right way for this situation, and 4. Wait for her brain to relay the order to her limbs to swing the right way and connect the right way in order to carry out the game plan.

It has always been hilarious to me. They get up there and hope and pray they can put the dang bat on the ball. That’s what is going through their heads the majority of the time.

Things always change in sports.

Its hard to compare tennis records pre-1968 vs. post-1968 due to the change in amateurism/professional eligibility in the Grand Slams.

College football history would probably look a lot different if a playoff had been instituted in 1965.

Concern for history shouldn't prevent the sport from moving forward.

Integrity of the statistics is a minor issue. The overwhelming issue is the lethal projectiles that would be launched toward the pitcher and infielders at the major league level using metal bats.

2 weekends in a row not hitting

Yeah most of the top 30 pitchers are in the SEC so hitting in this conference is very hard. Most teams are gonna pitch there best against the #1 team. Our best 2 pitchers are going to get better soon and help win more games. A lot of hitters go through slumps and now is better than end of the season going into tournament time.

Situational hitting at the collegiate level is taught all of the time. Is it not being done by our staff?

Do people not understand softball and baseball hitting is very difficult. Not many hitters will bat over 500 and we don't have any right now. And most of the time you just can't hit it where you want to there's some exceptional bunters and some just can't do it. What ever most players fail around 70% of the time.

Two things. 1. It seems that our players look at way too many pitches and wind up down in the count, at which time it definitely becomes the pitchers advantage. 2. You never make the decision to hit the ball. You make the decision to not swing/hit the ball. It is way easier to come off the swing than to make the decision to start the swing. You are always hitting the pitch unless the coach has given you a take signal.

No one is saying it isn’t difficult. But if it is being taught, one would be led to believe it isn’t impossible
