I argued with him in a state politics class as an undergrad about his voting to ban smoking in private establishments after he’d just given a long presentation about government telling people what to do too much. Nice enough guy, though.Saw Tim Burchett this morning chilling on the sidewalk by himself. Hit him with a "Go Vols!" and got one back.
He's good people. A rarity amongst his peers imo.
I think telling people not to harm or kill others isn't quite over the line for government telling people what to do too much.I argued with him in a state politics class as an undergrad about his voting to ban smoking in private establishments after he’d just given a long presentation about government telling people what to do too much. You don't have to patronize any business you don't want to. Not really for me to tell others what they're allowed to do inside of their own property, but YMMV.I think telling people not to harm or kill others isn't quite over the line for government telling people what to do too much.
Agree that's too much of a sledge hammer. You don't have to patronize any business you don't want to. Not really for me to tell others what they're allowed to do inside of their own property, but YMMV.
Also, the law required a nice restaurant with a separate, and separately-ventilated, cigar room to cease operations. Wasn't bothering anybody. That's what happens when you take a sledgehammer to things, though.
I think the biggest thing is consistency in logic. I disagree with Rand Paul on a lot of his political stances, but he's logically consistent and sticks to his principles doggedly. For sure. And I meant what I said about him being a nice guy. We had a great interaction after the class was over and I think he's a genuine guy. At the end of the day there's not really anybody I agree with 100% of the time.I think the biggest thing is consistency in logic. I disagree with Burchett on some things and he's had some wild takes, but generally thing he's a good guy. But like in the case you're describing, its not logically consistent to argue for the government to stay out of it then vote for the government to be knee deep in it.
Anyway, don't want to devolve any discussions. Just thought it was a cool interaction.
Cause that’s an ignorant statement. You pay taxes for roads to the tune of about $1.5 billion in TN per year alone. What does that have to do with anything?
Ny the way, I drove from Knoxville to Arkansas, through Mississippi. You're doing ajob.
Settle down. I'm just giving you a hard time. By definition, taxation is theft. I dont look at road taxes as tax, more of a toll for driving on the roads. The more you drive, the more you pay. You don't drive, you don't pay.Cause that’s an ignorant statement. You pay taxes for roads to the tune of about $1.5 billion in TN per year alone.
It’s also disingenuous to the public servants we have out there who have a heart’s desire to serve. Judging by this response, I’m not surprised.

Taxation isn't always theft. In many cases, we vote to tax ourselves for a public benefit. There's dozens of examples of this. I don't feel all of my taxes are theft. Some of them I gladly give, like Pittman-Robertson excise taxes. Taxes that pay firefighters and police. Roads. Public education. Etc.Settle down. I'm just giving you a hard time. Taking something from someone by force is theft, whether it's voted on or not. Everyone has a tax they think is justifiable. Taxation by definition is theft. Just because some people voted to take your property doesn't make it not theft.Taxation isn't always theft. In many cases, we vote to tax ourselves for a public benefit.
