So, let me get this straight. Last week, people were ready to go ahead and fire Caldwell if she didn’t hold onto the twins because a mass exodus was a fireable offense.
This week, a poster reports that they are staying, but now we want to fire her because she must have made some deal for playing time for next year for a player that isn’t as good as her All-SEC sister, but demonstratively got better as the season went on. Do I have that right?
Coaches, players, and sometimes their parents, sit down and talk about what a role is going to be going forward at the end of every year. In football it’s more often done with the position coach, but in basketball it’s most often done with the head coach. Every Coach that has been here, including Pat Summitt, had these conversations with players at the end of the season. The only difference now is how much easier it is for a player to transfer.
I will certainly agree that the dad seems to be a lot on social media. But I don’t think it’s fair to anyone to claim that there was some back room deal done to keep them both here for whatever reason. I think it’s also reasonable to assume that a player that progressed and saw her role grown during her freshman season would likely have a larger role next year, provided she continued to improve over the course of the offseason.
Assuming they do not advance out of this weekend, Caldwell will know how critical next season is for her future, and I seriously doubt she or any other coach would make deals to keep and play players that could not help her win in that critical season.
