The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Rick Barnes is world famous for being an underachiever when it matters the most. Top 20 in all time wins and yet only ONE final four in 4 decades of coaching and that wasn't even at Tennessee.

look I love Rick Barnes as a person he's a treasure but there's no way my eyes are blind to the truth.

he is very good at being good enough to keep his job. he has had multiple times had Tennessee ranked 1 or 2 in the country and then completely crapped the bed when it actually means something. And this was all known when we hired him.

people may not like to hear it but I completely believe Bruce Pearl was just as good as Barnes and may have been even greater if he kept his job.
“Regular Season” Rick.

1 of 3 schools to go to 3 straight Sweet 16's, and could still be 4 in a row. Yep. Barnes is trash. Some acting like losing to a top 15 NET is the end of the world. Ament had a really bad game and UT was still right there. Bet he doesnt have a game like that in the real tourney.

lol you make it sound like sooo much. how about talking about all the times we should have done way better and failed to achieve based on our elite talent?

how bout you list them out?
That's such a ********, strawman argument used by low IQ people who don't know ball. There are tons of "basketball schools" that have zero national championships (Houston, Wake Forest, Illinois, etc) and Rick is the absolute best coach UT has ever had, and possibly will have. You can't say he failed to achieve because we just got our highest rated recruit ever this year, and you can't beat the blue bloods without a couple of guys ranked like Nate is, which again, we've never had.

Edit: I just went back on read some of your other comments, and you actually might be the lowest IQ commenter on this thread. Its impressive

Because there’s more times where we advanced to our seed level’s expectation. I agree that he’s never exceeded it, but when you get top 4 seeds most years and you hit the Sweet 16, you’ve done what’s expected.

I'm not saying Barnes sucks. The players he brought in are bad. Burg the best 2 guard he could get. Come on. You can't win with projects anymore.
It doesn’t always work. We’re not terrible, but we’re definitely not as good as the last 2 years. It’s nice that a down year will still be a tournament year and maybe even a Sweet 16. TBD on that. I know I’m in the minority, but I do think we have a shot at a run.

Just my 2 cents. Barnes is a fantastic coach but he has too many flaws
to get past EE. Even with great talent, he has too many tendencies for
great talent to overcome. Substitution errors, stubbornness regarding
playing with fouls, lack of roster building, loyalty to ineffective or subpar
performers. He is a great coach, an even greater person, but today’s
game has passed him by (similar to Fulmer).

Personally I hope Barnes stays a couple more years, but I think he retires this year. Until this year, over the last decade he has a a great nucleus of a team returning plus getting great guys in the portal. But this year, he will have nothing great left. Maybe Evans and Estrella???
I think he leaves when we get knocked out of the NCAA... Then the Gainey vs English talk happens .. just my opinion

Pearl and Kiffin are a lot alike.

He doubled the NCAAT appearances for Texas. He went to a SS at Clemson, and it took them 21 years to get back. He set/reset much higher expectations at big universities. The funny thing is people complaining about expectations that HE set. Same thing at Texas, and they still haven’t found much 4 coaches later.

Meh. The bigger issue is that this is just not a job that can draw a proven name (unless it’s one that just got fired like Barnes)

We will be rolling the dice in the mid major lottery like most non blue bloods have to do
That’s a pretty nice salary slot to fill, even if Danny held back a few $M as an incentive for immediate growth. They would be fishing at the top of the gene pool.

Not at all. He’s changed playing with fouls. See Gillespie yesterday and did it earlier in the season. He’s also adjusted quite nicely to the NIL era with transfers and high schoolers. The game has not passed him by. He’s embraced it.

Barnes is in his 11th year as the head ball coach.

6 of the 9 times TN has won 25 or more games, Barnes was the coach.

2 of the 5 highest winning percentages in a season since 1950 and Rick Barnes was the coach.

The 30 games won LAST year is the third most in UT’s 117 seasons. The 78.9% winning percentage was the 10th best ever.

You LoM posters wanting CRB to leave are idiots. Stop eating paint chips.
…but, but: Tasty paint chips…
