I'm not at all suggesting that these are prosperous times for those of us under 55, but I wonder to what extent the numbers cited here are a function of 1) the 55-and-over demographic being a much larger percentage of the total population today than it was in 2000 and 2) today's 55-and-over demographic holding more substantial investments in their own name (even if, for many or most, these investments provide a less secure retirement than that provided by the pensions their parents enjoyed).

After our horribly misguided foray into Iraq in 2003, we ended up uniting Iraq and Iran after all. Brilliant. The fact those two were at odds with each other for so long likely gave us some leverage in the region and other Gulf states didn’t get sucked in. And just like Charlie Wilson said about Afghanistan 1, we effed up the end game.
