The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Kentucky had to settle for an alum because even they couldn’t land a big name. There is no chance we will.
Kentucky had to settle because they ran Calipari out on a rail after he went 410-123 there with 7 SEC T, 6 SECT titles, 4 Final Fours and an NC. Then they tried to hire other FF coaches and when they said no, went with their alum.

Barnes retiring here is a way different look than the chaos of Kentucky when Cal left.

Yes it is true. If that is the ceiling I guess nothing more to be said. You are a good poster Thunder but why not us? That is the question. When we bow out in the 2nd round again this year, the question will remain.

Todd Golden who has far less experience than Barnes wins the championship in his 3rd year in the program and is seemingly taking over the league at Florida. Some perhaps are appreciative of Barnes but at least once would like more. I guess we are content with being in the conversation but that’s it.
Golden was the youngest coach to win it since Valvano in 1983. The history isn’t exactly on your side with that. I want to be in the conversation every year because that’s the only way to win it.

My question to those who worry about finding another coach because of Barnes success at Tennessee? What if he does retire in the next 2 to 3 years? What if he does this year? I'd love to see Tennessee reach a Final Four, but I don't see how you can hold on to a veteran coach at this point for so long like Barnes.

I actually think Barnes success and him getting to go on his own terms will be a major positive for coaches looking our way. He's shown that a good coach can come here, get paid big money and can be very successful on the court, while bringing in players of good moral character.

There will never be a better time in Tennessee basketball history to hire a new coach unless something incredibly unforseen happens before Barnes decides to retire.

We just went to 2 straight EEs. If you haven't seen how we can't hold on to Barnes over his career at UT, you don't know anything at all about the game

I do know a decent amount. Yes,I do know about the Elite 8s back to back, and how successful he's been at Tennessee in his last 10-11 years. It's like the previous poster pointed out about Barnes that I agree with.

I think he’s built up Tennessee to the point that whoever comes after him will be a top notch coach demanding big money.

However, I do agree with the lifetime contract which will be enough time to look for the next coach.

I won't lie to you, a part of me hopes that Coach Barnes hangs on until after ADDW moves on to a better job then retires. Right now I have zero faith in ADDW's ability to replace Barnes with a competent coach upon retirement; worried he might try to "experiment" again like he did with the Lady Vols hire.

But for Texas' actions in firing a hall of fame basketball coach and Handsome Dave Hart's panic hire of a flame out Donnie Tyndall (10 year NCAA show cause), Tennessee would not have bèen in a position to secure Coach Barnes, such that White Danny won't have that alignment in place next time.

I like basketball coaches coming out of Texas, maybe Scott Drew or his former assistant coaching at Texas Tech would try their luck in the SEC with Tennessee.

Don't know if Rick Barnes would wear the three stripe logo or not, we shall see.

Yes we were 17 in offensive efficiency last year but still only managed 50 pts, shooting 29% FG and 17% FG from three while getting pounded by Houston. When it mattered we were not even competitive because we could not score. Houston didn’t exactly blister the nets.

Two years ago with a historic player in Knecht we were 28th in offensive efficiency in kenpom. Guy gives us 37 (out of 66 total pts) and the rest of the team shoots 32% from FG and we’re content to be observers most of the game and pray DK made a bucket. Another game by the way when we had a double digit lead in 1st half.

The worst of them all was in ‘23 when we allowed a 9 seed in Florida Atlantic to hold us to 55 pts in the tournament. In ‘22 we shoot 11% (2 of 18) from 3 and lose to Michigan (a 11th seed). In ‘21 an unimpressive Oregon State throttles us as we again can only muster 56 pts in the tournament. In 2018, against another 11th seed in Loyola / Chicago we blow a 9 pt lead (same as Florida Atlantic years later) against a
Mid major.

Rinse repeat. It is the same story and we will have the same result this year. Another Barnes team with a 5 star frosh that doesn’t move the needle. We never have enough scorers with Barnes teams with the exception of the 2019 squad. Every commentator and college basketball analyst has noted as much about UT annually. We are renowned for our great defense and toughness but also for going on long scoring droughts.

Often it is agonizing to watch our half court offense. Whatever our kenpom rating is irrelevant. We are a team where none of the leads we have are safe because we squander them. In the NCAA this year we will lose by doing the same thing and blowing a lead or getting blown out from start to finish. I think it is inevitable. Will support them regardless but facing this reality it will be difficult to be optimistic heading into postseason. Hope I’m proved wrong. I like surprises.

I mean I was using recency bias on Barnes tournament history and felt the two finals teams we lost to were pretty good - Houston and Purdue. Your post is strong and makes the case that we don't show up consistently in the tournament and get repeatedly bounced early. Gave a like for the depth of credible examples to support your position even giving Barnes credit for the 2019 squad.

Lol....those who use the Handsome Dave reference always solicit a chuckle.

When your so called lottery pick making $40,000 a game is 1 of 13 (8%) and your 2 guard is scoreless (0%) you suck. Even if you do out rebound someone 2-1. Barnes has been here eleven years while Vandy's coach is in his second year taking over a horrible team and he already has better players than Barnes.

He’s the best coach Tennessee has ever had and a no doubt hall of famer. So there’s that.
unfortunately that says more about Tennessee history than it does about coach Barnes.

he is the best coach we have ever had and at the same time this team won't make it past the first weekend of the tournament.

He’s top 20 in wins in the history of the sport. One team doesn’t define 4 decades of success.

Rick Barnes is world famous for being an underachiever when it matters the most. Top 20 in all time wins and yet only ONE final four in 4 decades of coaching and that wasn't even at Tennessee.

look I love Rick Barnes as a person he's a treasure but there's no way my eyes are blind to the truth.

he is very good at being good enough to keep his job. he has had multiple times had Tennessee ranked 1 or 2 in the country and then completely crapped the bed when it actually means something. And this was all known when we hired him.

people may not like to hear it but I completely believe Bruce Pearl was just as good as Barnes and may have been even greater if he kept his job.

Quick UT bball history for posters talking about how we suck this year and Barnes needs to go..
We will be a 5 seed under Barnes this year. In 45 years prior to Barnes, we were 5 seed or higher 5 times.
In 11 years under Barnes, we will have been a 5 seed or higher 8 times
5 times in 45 years
8 times in 11 years.
Be careful what you wish for and find some perspective.

I honestly don't think anyone with a clue believes Barnes needs to go, or wants to see him gone before he's ready. Drive-by's on the game thread, maybe, but then that's the reason to avoid game threads, here and the football forum.

some people want to be president. some people just want to pee in the white hose bathroom. be careful what kind of person you allow in your life. it will limit your future prospects.

guys who are Rick Barnes age are about to exit college basketball for good. lots of great coaches in there but the nature of the game has passed them by quickly. it's a shame but you can see guys like Tom Izzo gone soon for the same reason Nick Saban doesn't coach anymore.

Yep. Barnes is trash for sure. It’s not like we’ve been to the last 2 Elite 8s.
