Sacramento St to the MAC

Gotta lock down that lucrative Northern California TV market.
Shouldn’t take long to leave San Jose State in the dust in that area. They have to be one of the worst run athletic departments. About five years ago they got the great idea of having one of the smallest Division 1-A stadiums in the country at 30,000 and tearing down one side of the stadium so now they are at 18,000 seats.

I remember when they said they were renovating their stadium, and I thought it was probably a good idea because it looked like a high school stadium.

Then I saw them play and when I saw the side they "renovated" I thought "Wow this is taking a long time", then realized that was in fact the finished product. And I was pretty shocked, because while it's not like SJS is a hot ticket or anything but even before that it seemed like they had fans on the side they tore down.

Looks like the football travel expense for MAC teams would be a big problem. And $18mil buy in. Pretty steep for one sport in the MAC.

They had to do something with their football program after moving to the non-football Big West. If you're going to have to pay an entry fee to join a conference as an affiliate member, might as well make it an FBS conference. They'll likely recoup the $18MM faster than they would the $6MM to join the United Conference.

Still, that will get expensive fast

But they'll be getting paid under the MAC's football rights deal as opposed to the Big Sky's. 4 games worth of travel, even to places like Buffalo and Amherst, will be offset easier than Sac State's current travels to Billings and Moscow.

I’m convinced complete idiots run college sports. Not many decisions in recent years make sense. This will be one.

They don't make sense to you because you're a fan that appreciates the game as it has been and the tradition along with it. Conferences, rivalries, etc. mean something to you.

Unfortunately, when you end up with a bunch of money-driven suits running things, everything that you think makes sense is dirty toilet water to them. You're just a revenue unit.

West coast Big10 schools are already recognizing the travel back and forth is a drain. I’m not sure what Sac St brings the MAC other than a long road trip
