For the long time Tennessee Basketball fans. Your thoughts on Coach Emmett Lowery

I was freshman walk on in 58 (never played) and remember both Lowery and Sines as maybe they were in transition. Big guy Tormolen was biggest individual I had seen at that point, I know they played slow and really good defense but did not know enough to evaluate Lowry although team was good but nobody as good as Kentucky back then

Lowery was the coach when I interned Tennessee in the Fall of 1956. Tennessee played their home games in Memorial gymnasium. he had a decent team but didn’t threaten to win the Conference title. The Gym was a disaster, Hardly any seating and one side of it was a huge stage. Lighting was terribly insufficient. I remember one night we were playing Kentucky coached by Adolf Rupp. When his team came on the court, they were wearing minor’s hats with were used in coal mines to provide light in the mines. It was an embarrassing place to play SEC basketball.

Good coach when basketball was an afterthought. Had the misfortune of coaching against Rupp in his prime, but so did every other SEC coach.

Was that the same as Alumni Gym? I saw several concerts there when I was in school, and some intramural games were played in it also - plus wrestling meets

I think he meant Alumni Gym, as the Vols played there before moving into The Armory (aka Stokely Athletics Center) after some improvements.

I guess they may have changed the name over the last 65-70 years. It is the same place where my class graduated.

Alumni Memorial Auditorium and Gymnasium

In the mid to late 80s, I played basketball almost every weekend at Alumni Gym. Even if the doors were locked, they were pickable, we played on the main floor/Gym, still had all the orange, most of the time until they put a cover and lock on the hoop. Then we moved to the upstairs gym, which was always locked, but still pickable with a hard pull. Great memories
