Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

Seems like a bizarre choice to set up shop almost two hours from your nearest game, and even farther from a major airport, but I also don’t know what the other options were. Some of the other confirmed base camps like Germany in Winston-Salem and Croatia in Alexandria, VA that aren’t even anywhere near any of their games make even less sense.

I am curious why Spurs are considered part of the big 6.

United and Liverpool have legendary amounts of trophies.

Arsenal, City, and Chelsea have tons of major trophies.

Is 6th spot a swinging door for all the other clubs and who starts delivering now? Aston Villa, Newcastle, Nottingham, Everton all have arguably better history than Spurs.

It’s just a media title based on how big the fan base is and how much money the club has. It’s always subject to change and it means essentially nothing.

City had less history than Tottenham before the oil money. Chelsea hadn’t won a whole lot before Abramovich. 6 out of 7 of Villa’s first division titles are before WW1. Forest won pretty much all their major trophies in a 3 or 4 season span in the late 70’s. Everton have a ton of history but have been relatively down during the Premier League era. It may change this year but Arsenal have never won a major European trophy while Spurs have 3. You can criticize any club’s history if you pick the right time period.

Also Charles, the knock of City and Chelsea’s winning after owners that invested is a tired one.

60% of United’s titles occurred during a stretch of 1994-2013.

50% of Liverpool’s titles came from the late 70’s to late 80’s.

Most every team won in decades of dominance and short historical stints vs winning 2-3 a decade over a century.

Tired but true.

Before new ownership City had 2 first division titles, 4 FA cups, 2 League cups and 1 European trophy. Chelsea had 1 first division title, 3 FA cups, 1 League cup and 0 European trophies before Abramovich. Tottenham had 2 first division titles, 8 FA cups, 4 League cups and 2 European trophies in the same time span.

And you’re just proving my point with United and Liverpool’s runs. Most clubs have had their ‘glory years’. You can criticize anyone if you pick and choose which period you’re talking about.

Just watched a great match between Dortmund and Heidenheim. Guirassey played a lovely match. Good to see him get a couple.

I'm in Chattanooga. Our local paper reported that their initial plan was to stay in ATL and use Atlanta United's facilities, but they were only willing to offer a single practice field, or something. They thought their next best option was here.

It is 1.5 hours away, but I can see why they like it. Baylor's campus and athletic facilities are nicer than most colleges, plus it is very secluded.

Leicester above relegation places due only to goal differential after a 6 point deduction. Would be wild if they went down to League One.

Nothing to see here. Just another club punished for running afoul of FFP while City continue to skate on breaches that were orders of magnitude greater. What has it been since they were charged? Five years now?

FTR, I’m not amongst those that expect, or even think they should be docked back down to the depths of the pyramid. But for them to not be penalized at all is absurd. Maybe just docked an enough points across several seasons where they miss out on CL for a little while.

I think the league has the officials doing that work bleed if we’re all being honest. How else could anyone explain the decisions both on field and VAR for two years now.

Eh. Everton also regularly get shafted by refs and VAR (gotta be leading the league in apologies received at this point) and also got points deductions. Doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive, lol.

Couple things here.

1) Everton, according to ESPN anyway, benefited more from VAR decisions last year than any other team. I'll admit, I have not had time to watch any games outside of City this year and even missed a 1/3rd of those. I just find it interesting that Liverpool and United supporters are even discussing how what's happened to City over the past month feels punitive. Maybe it's just their hatred of Arsenal, but the calls have been objectively nonsense.

2) Points deductions = No one would suggest Everton has done a good job at a leadership level over the years. They should never, ever be a mid or bottom table team. Their history is top 5 all time in England. Their leadership has failed their fanbase time and time again. They got fat and lazy off their past success and fully took advantage of a loyal fanbase that shows up no matter what. Maybe the Friedkin group will change that.

Finally, I understand why Liverpool, United, and Arsenal hate City (and Chelsea, and Newcastle). None of those teams were supposed to be at the table. The Premier league (founded in 1992) was set up to keep certain clubs at the top, and the rest should be happy to be invited to cocktail hour and an occasional desert tray. Chelsea first, and then City were never supposed to seriously challenge for anything. When money began pouring into those clubs, the power brokers scrambled to create financial fair play (finalized 2009). They attempted to keep their good ole boy clubs locked in. Their issue? They did it too late. Chelsea and City did enough prior to the rules being enacted. So, what next for the old guard? Well, they attempted to try the cases publicly in the press and intentionally leaked confidential information. This was foolish as then the courts began siding with City.

So, then what? Well, let's go after other clubs and make their fanbases irate. How could they penalize us when City...... blah, blah, blah.

I am unapologetically a City supporter. I love watching the old cartel cry about it.
