Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

If Cignetti can do it in 2 years at IU, then there’s no reason why we can’t compete in year 6. If we aren’t contenders next season then it’s time to move on.
I agree with most what you’re saying but not sure I agree or disagree with the moving on piece. What was done at IU is extremely impressive and worthy of praise. That said, they also had a pretty easy schedule in a year where the SEC was way down and their only true competition was OSU, who also had a very easy schedule. I’m by no means taking away from what they accomplished, but I do think it’s worth looking at all the facts and seeing that their regular season schedule wasn’t some juggernaut they had to overcome.

This Indiana team has to be the most remarkable in college football history right? Shocking what they’ve pulled off
Maybe the Auburn turnaround from 2012 to 2013. in 2012 they went 3-9 and fired their hc, hired malzahn and went to the natty in 2013

Tennessee HC Josh Heupel hires Indiana's Derek Owings to lead strength program

Josh Heupel has tabbed Indiana strength coach Derek Owings to lead his strength program at Tennessee sources tell Volquest.

Owings and Heupel have some history together having worked with each other at UCF in 2018.

He and his family will board a plane bound for Rocky Top in two hours this morning in Miami just hours after the Hoosiers defeated Miami for the top prize in the sport. He is set to be introduced to the team just before lunch today.

Owings was the Director of Athletic Performance for football with the Hoosiers where he just wrapped up his second season, winning a national title and his sixth working for Hoosier head coach Curt Cignetti since joining his staff in 2020 when the two were at James Madison.

Owings will bring energy to Rocky Top.

Overall, Owings has helped his programs to a 64-9 overall record in his six seasons and trained over 25 All-America selections and numerous first-team all-conference picks.
He takes over for Kurt Schmidt, who was not renewed by Heupel and Tennessee following the 2025 season. Heupel hired Schmidt to be his strength coach when he got his first head coaching job at UCF in 2018. Then Schmidt followed him to Rocky Top where he has led Heupel’s program the last five years.

Owings helped the Hoosiers reach the College Football Playoff in his first season on campus and three pupils earned All-America honors. Linebacker Aiden Fisher earned first-team All-America accolades, while defensive lineman Mikail Kamara and defensive back D’Angelo Ponds both earned second-team honors.

During his tenure with James Madison, Owings helped five student-athletes win player of the year awards – Todd Centeio (2022; Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year), Jalen Green (2023; Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year), Mike Greene (2021; CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year), Cole Johnson (2021; CAA Offensive Player of the Year) and Jordan McCloud (2023; Sun Belt Player of the Year).

Owings spent two seasons at Texas Tech (2019-20) as the associate strength & conditioning coach for the Red Raider football team. Prior to TTU, he spent one year as assistant director of sports performance with football at UCF with Heupel.

Owings was lead strength coach for the wide receivers, running backs, tight ends, defensive backs, and linebackers at Texas Tech. While at UCF, he oversaw the receivers, running backs, defensive backs, and specialists.

Owings holds numerous certifications, which includes CSCS-NSCA, USAW-Level 1, Running Mechanics Professional Level 1 and 2, Metabolic Analytics Practitioner, FRCms, Precision Nutrition Level 1, Body Type Nutrition as well as CPR and AED – ARC.
Owings played college football at Mercer before getting in involved as a strength coach,

What?

They beat:
Ohio State
Oregon
Penn State
Illinois
Alabama
Miami
Oregon again
Oregon
Miami
Bana
OSU
Those were impressive wins

Impressive season for them
Do t think the way they recruit and are so portal dependent t that it’s sustainable
You can’t be perfect with portal gets every year
Your not gonna get a heisman guy at Quarterback each year
Other teams will blowup your model of how they did it

Can we stop with the gimmick of Indiana played nobody and college football is weak. Some on here talking about this like a Mickey Mouse run.
For what to cop out Heupel?
Tennessee loses three regular season games with that schedule and Heup knows we were subpar.

Yep
He knows and it shows by the coaching changes he did
We were soft and undisciplined
That should change with the new coaches we hired from looking at what their teams look
