How long is Steven Pearl's leash at Auburn?

I imagine he has this year and next before his seat warms up, assuming that AU does not perform well.

SHORT leash. I was gobsmacked when, not when Bruce retired to run for politics, but when they appointed an unproven commodity as a replacement. Sure, there's continuity. But it was a huge gamble to promote the son of a great to run a major college program (think Derek Dooley). Yes, Bruce is there helping at times. But it's clear that Steven is not Bruce.
No ill will to either of them.

OP, we don't play Auburn for a few more week of Saturdays. You thinking of the Kentucky game this Saturday? Maybe this should be in the NCAA thread.

Eff Steven Pearl. The dude does nothing but trash TN. He had a spot on the team that he didn’t deserve. His dad messed up and acknowledged it but Steven blamed TN. He doesn’t deserve a head coaching job in college. Maybe the high school level but nothing beyond that.

I think the OP was referring to making Mark Pope’s seat hotter this Saturday. I think Bruce was very calculating when he chose his retirement date. Given the timing, Auburn’s options were very limited. He served up an opportunity for Steven that he hadn’t earned…much like his playing time at Tennessee. I’m unsure of the contract/buyout for Steven Pearl, but this whole thing is typical of Bruce Pearl’s oversized ego.

I don't know, but I've been waiting on this thread to happen. It is been absolutely disgusting to watch all the big time coaches (I won't mention the one in Knoxville), all the newscasters, and all the sports writers come out WITHOUT prompt and pump up Steve Pearl and talk about what a great job he is doing. It's honestly pathetic. Why did every one of these coaches and media types feel compelled to talk about how great he was doing after taking over the program? What had he really done to earn such a position? Did Auburn Go on a national coaching search to replace there legendary coach? No, of course they didn't. They went the lady Vols route after Pat left and settled on the number two and charge.

This is just nepotism, plain and simple. I have nothing against Steven. I appreciate what he gave to the Vols. But, everyone on this fanbase knows that nepotism played a part in his minutes while he was here. Everyone with a functioning brain cell knows that nepotism is the only reason that he's moved into the coaching ranks. And finally everyone knows absolutely that he is given a SEC level coaching opportunity based on nothing more than nepotism.

Now, the reality check is at hand. I'm not upset about any of it because watching Auburn get back and it's proper place will be fulfilling. But, what bothers me is watching people fake it as if Steven Pearl has any business whatsoever taking over a program that has been cemented in the top 10 for the past several years. Now the chickens are coming home to roost and it will be interesting to see how long they put up with the almost certain collapse that's coming.

Mark my words, few if any who blew smoke up is rear end all summer and into the fall will come out with an apology talking about how wrong they were.

I agree with your post but what are those guys supposed to say. Even during our awful years, didn't Saban always talk about how good our team was during the week prior to our annual football game? We all knew he was gonna blow our doors off.

Yes he did. And it was honestly patronizing. LOL. It takes his foot off the gas in the third quarter against us wins 55 to 10, then goes on to talk about how strong our program and coaching staff is.

Most of this was unprompted banter that I noted before the season began. People just coming out and saying how great Steven Pearl is going to do, how great of a hire he is, how ready for this moment that he is. I'm not talking about somebody putting a mic in front of their face and asking them their thoughts on it. I'm talking about coming out of nowhere and voluntarily making the statements. It's like in reality everyone knew what was going on and how disgusting and embarrassing it really is, but felt the need to placate the situation for some reason. Rick did it over the top and it was embarrassing.

I think BP set up Steven for a buyout that will support him for most of the rest of his adult life... smart, but so disgraceful after auburn fans invested so much into BP
Nobody but Auburn has any responsibility for making a big buyout on a hire like that. That's almost as irresponsible as Mike Hamilton signing lane Kiffin with an $800,000 buy out. Yes there are no zeros missing in that number. Let that sink in for a minute. USC laughed their arses off writing that check. Auburn is stupid for giving him a huge buyout. Totally irresponsible and they deserve everything they're going to get because of it.

Not short enough! They will pop him anyway. They won’t let him hang around much…. BP handcuffed them with his timing. Real scumbag move. Alabama peeps should be very wary of his political aspirations.

After the success they've had under BP wonder how patient they'll be with SP? Pope's seat also heating up quickly. Let's hope the Vols warm it up even more Saturday.
I have told my wife since Bruce Pearl quietly stepped down at Auburn and Steven was moved immediately into the head coach position, something happened at Auburn. Bruce has never missed a chance to talk on a microphone and be on tv. Auburn took Steven with no questions asked. Eventually, something is going to come out that will stun us all. It just seems to obvious.

Bruce has a contract for TV. Has been on several times already

Haha, I didn't see that with Rick but maybe he was pulling a Satan. I mean Saban. He may be tired of fighting really good AU teams for the past 10 years and would like them to be a bottom dweller for a while. I fully agree though, no way that kid has earned an SEC head coaching job. Bruce had many miles on his tires before reaching that point.

The worst thing Saban ever said about Tennessee was in 2021 when after the game, Saban said: we have to go get ready for next week, when we will have to play a “real team” (LSU).

Steven either meets Auburn’s expectations for Bruce as a coach or he’s gone. I’d say it’s more like he’s on trial.
