QB. Doesn't have to be the top-rated QB. It doesn't take a top-rated QB to run this system. It takes someone who can make the reads and check down to the right guy. Arm strength just needs to be good enough, not spectacular. As long as they have it between the ears, that's what really matters for this system.

RB. It can be a depth guy just to share the carries. It doesn't have to be a superstar. Sure, we would all love to see a superstar, but quality at QB and RB really depends on our portal budget. Prioritizing quality on defense is a much bigger need.

2 space-eating DTs. Big guys who command a double team, that can eat blocks, and free up the LEOs and disruptors to put pressure on the QB.

At least 2-3 disruptors. DL with twitch. Guys that can penetrate the backfield (don't get excited Jack) and maintain pressure.

This season has shown we need higher quality DL play. Not replacing ONL, Omari, and Simmons was a huge mistake.

At least 1 LB, maybe 2. Guys with some speed to cover, but not afraid to knock someone on their ass. And they have to be able to tackle. I hope Knowles believes in fundamentals, because everyone on defense needs a refresher course on how to tackle.

At least 2 quality CB and 2 quality safeties. Maybe a NB. The more talented the better. Guys on the roster now need to get better or just get pushed down the depth chart. Secondary play has to be better.

A kicker. Someone that doesn't wilt under pressure.

Get all that settled, then, if there's money left over, and with expanded rosters, you can portal shop for luxuries. Maybe an OL or two. Maybe take a chance on a tall WR for the red zone. Just anyone that makes you better for the season.

I agree w most of this.

2 BIG DTs, 2 S, and 1 star/NB and of course a QB tops my list. Along with S&C coach and special teams coach.

1LB but seems like a luxury to me. I think w better DL play and a coach who knows how to use them will make them look much better. Most won’t agree but I still think Telander can be good in a limited role. Run stopper on 1st and 2nd down type. Then I like Spillman, Carter and Harmon. Who knows about Burns because coaches inexplicably felt this need to play Bolton and Anes over Burns and Harmon.

Hoping better S&C helps the OL room. We don’t seem to have much quality depth still, especially on the iol. I’m moving towards the fahr Ellarbe crowd but don’t think it will happen.

I would actually portal a TE if Brame isn’t gonna play TE for us.


As disappointing as the season was, and as much as I hate the concept of how the Wild West world of portal and NIL works (doesn’t work), it makes for some interesting discussions.

Ordinarily I'd be excited at the thought of more staff replacements and getting better via the portal, but Heupel's history makes me less than optimistic.

Agree to disagree. It's very obvious GMac won't be starting next year as a select few continue to think. At this point, I'm not sure I even trust Heupel. Atleast not as much as I once did. Not that he cares what we think..

Also - after watching Jaylen McClain OSU- he’s not that good really. Yeah he starts at OSU, but I don’t think you throw 1 million at him to come transfer to Knoxville.

You can't base it off 1 game. McClain is an elite safety and would be a huge upgrade over anything we've had here.

Those types are all over VN. We definitely have some miserable people for fans. BV is one of maybe 3-4 I'd actually put stock in. Nobody is right 100%, but he's definitely right more than wrong. From him and the few other reliable posters, we're going big this year. Like more than we have the last 2 combined. It also helps that rosters go to 105, the last few years we didn't have the roster flexibility. Now we do. Gonna be a fun 7-10 days.

Since I’m one of those who posted that, and you’re essentially calling me out, I’ll defend myself. How many already knew as soon as the season was over we’d see the “we’re going big in the portal” posters? It happens, as you said, just like clockwork. Bob is a trusted source more than others, so I’ll choose to believe him. BUT I’ve been scorned way more than I’ve been blessed when it comes to listening to said insiders regarding portal recruiting. So we shall see.

One of us will be wrong and my hope is it’s me, but history says otherwise.
