Especially on the defensive side of the ball. Great opportunities at a big time program for transfers to come in and be IMMEDIATE starters.

Only questions are can this staff evaluate good enough to get a high rate of return and will we spend the money wisely?

That sounds like silver lining and moral victory talk.

Losing ANY game hurts. It impacts the perception of the team, the staff, and the program in general. CJH understands it. I could see it in his level of intensity during the game. The sad part is, they didn’t have the answers to change the outcome and got pounded. The close score was not indicative of how the game really went.

Portal is going to come down to how much is a guy worth to you, because they're going to choose the best situation and the most money. Vols haven't been all that aggressive getting into bidding wars in the portal.. Seems if there was ever a year to break the bank it's probably this one.

Dont need to break the bank, just teach the defense a little trick called TACKLING!

Willie Martinez should be shown the door. What DB has this staff recruited out of high school that has looked like they belong? Maybe Gibson? Maybe Farooq with some more time? There have been ZERO studs from high school recruited or developed. Best DB’s were from previous staff or came out of portal. We are missing at an alarming rate on DB’s out of high school

Well we did next to nothing in the portal last year, so while there will be some dudes for the taking, I’ll believe us making a legitimate push for some of them when I see it.

And recruits need to be shown coaching...They didn't see much of that our last 2 games.

Willie Martinez has developed and sent many players to the NFL. Somebody on here had a list at one point and it was absolutely insane. Martinez is nowhere near the worst position coach on this team.

They probably don't know how to evaluate as well as you

The current play of our secondary says otherwise. What players has he recognized and recruited out of high school that are panning out? He’s had 5 years to have guys lined up ready to play. He’s certainly not totally responsible but he hasn’t exactly made a strong case on his behalf either.

He’s the DB coach, the DB’s have been the bright spot overall along with the DL. Tim Banks was responsible for the safeties and Inge for the LB’s which were our 2 worst positions on defense.

Redmond was one of the best in the SEC by the end of the season and only a Freshman,

DB’s bright spot? We aren’t watching the same team. They made some plays but we lucked up picking up Hood this past season. My point being 5 years in and what db recruit out of high school has looked like a DUDE for this team? Thats concerning about our evaluation. We were lucky to land McCoy and Hood out of portal as they’ve clearly been the best 2 DB’s over the last 2 years but unfortunately only getting 1 year from each. Best DB’s before that were back from Pruitt era (Alonte, Theo, McCullough). Probably missing another one or two.

Redmond was Freshman all SEC and tied for 2nd in interceptions and PBUs for CB. How bright do you want? By the end of the year he was playing great ball.

That's just it, I don't have much confidence in our coaching staff.

Watching Jakobe Thomas for Miami right now only makes me more annoyed with our defensive back mismanagement. He’s should still be a Vol and been a starter. Thomas has brought more physicality in one drive than any of our DB’s did combined the whole season. He’s been all over the field laying the wood. Is an in state kid to top it off as well

Peyton, we reward those that don't care by not correcting them and let them trot back out there.

This. I posted somewhere else that we really shat the bed letting him go. And that maybe, it's indicative of the passive nature of the CJH culture. CJH seems more mild mannered, as opposed to high strung, and I believe his teams are beginning to reflect his chill vibe, to their detriment
