I keep hearing that Knowles’ defensive scheme is complex and takes a while to learn. So now days with portal and NIL you only get kids for 1 maybe 2 years no more 4 or 5 years. Do yall think our players can learn it in that amount of time?

Yes
His scheme is what we run. He has a different emphasis on LB duties and is more aggressive than what we've been.

Unlike other programs, he isn't installing a new system and having to use players not ideal for his needs as he recruits better fits.

With that said, I don't recommend we expect a championship next year. Mastery of the game plan will still require time.

Jim Knowles is aware his defense can be complicated to learn

Knowles doesn’t disagree that his defense can be complicated, which is why he’s made efforts to teach his system in a way that allows players to have success quicker.

“Yes to both,” said Knowles in August when asked if his defense is complicated and takes time to learn. “I think in today’s game of football, it needs to be somewhat complicated because you need to have answers for everything — particularly at this level. Offenses don’t run the same things in college. You better have all different kinds of answers.

“For teaching and installing, I’ve gotten better at it, I’ve had to particularly when you come into a situation like this. Our charge is to be great now. If it’s too complicated, or if I can’t get it installed quickly, that’s my fault. I think I’ve developed a process that help move it along at a more rapid pace.”

If Tennessee finalizes a deal with Knowles, the expectation will be for Tennessee’s defense to show instant improvement next fall. Obviously, the defense should improve the longer Knowles is at Tennessee and the more experience players have in it. But fans won’t be patient next season — they’ll want to see positive results quickly.

Fortunately for the Vols, it sounds like Knowles is actively working to make his defense easier for players to pick up.

We don't run the same scheme. We run a Nickel defense. This is a 3 deep 4-2-5. There will be a learning curve.

Sorry, but this topic is really ridiculous. Our players are in COLLEGE. This is where you take subjects like Algebra, Calculus, Organic Chemistry, Ballroom Dancing, Quantum Physics, Statistics, VLSI Design, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Thermodynamics and more. To suggest that a defense, which is a board made with X's & O's moving around, is possibly too complex to learn in a few weeks let alone a month or more, is an insult to every player on the team. If Knowles's defensive schemes are really that complicated, perhaps he should have been hired by Duke, Harvard of Vandy.

From what I’ve read, CK defense is very close to what Banks has been running at Tennessee, so hopefully the transition will be easier since they already have somewhat of an understanding. At any rate, we should have a much tougher defense next year as opposed to this last year‘s.

What the hell no basket weaving? And as far as the ballroom dancing goes, I’m coordinated but damn.

I was a volunteer teacher for a while, and I was not impressed.

I was wondering the same. We have about 8 months before the fall season begins. I am confident our guys can learn the system and improve upon their fundamentals in that length of time.

Great hire and somebody who gave UT's offense all kind of problems. Will make UT better.
