Even George didn’t buy up players like this…
Some, yes. But never acquired in this volume.

I’m a bit jelly.
On a serious note, IF by chance the players association agrees to a salary cap, how will these contracts by all players running through 2027 and beyond be handled? Will they be grandfathered in? Because all this money is guaranteed even your beloved Yankees contracts..

My frustration is just that UTK is already the most expensive in-state public school for tuition and fees. And they try to promote a 'guaranteed' in-state policy despite requirements basically restricting the vast majority of HS to only having 2 or 3 graduating seniors even eligible per the guidelines.

That's not a guarantee at all...
It is a guarantee - for the very best and brightest from every qualifying HS in the state.

It is not a guarantee for those that were “pretty good”

In for a pound out with a penny IMO. Signing away your management rights is only going to cost you in the end. There is not a private equity firm in the world willing to make less money for the sake of sports results or sacrifice their return for a playoff birth. So you might stay reasonably good for a bit, but that will fade.
They want and WILL get their return on investment. How they do this won’t matter to them. Tradition doesn’t matter, just money$
This won’t end well for Utah or any other school/conference.

All grandfathered if they follow the model of the other major sports. NHL I believe was the last one to go with a cap. But all got grandfathered.

Might be in for a surprise. I think the owners are gonna dig their heels in on this, mainly because of the Yankees being fed up. Watch for the Pirates and the Marlins of the world to spend big this winter (relative to the past) heading into next year. MLB has basically "encouraged" them to do so headed into the contact negotiations at the end of next year.

The argument is gonna be the guys on the lower end are getting ran over by the top end guys. That's how every other league has gotten a cap passed. More $ for the lower level guys instead of the top 10 to 20%. They shut it down for a year, the players are gonna get squeezed. Will be interesting to see how it plays out. And a cap brings a floor with it as well. And the spread between the 2 is not that great. Revenue sharing will be bigger than it is now too.

Only thing I will add to this conversation is, we viewed how long it took to get fans back in the stands after the 1994 strike. It took a steroid home run battle between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa plus Ripken going for consecutive games played record before fans gave a damn again...

Better watch what we wish for... Also I don't think 30 billionaire Owners can ever agree on a floor...

Now we need a new S&C coach and throw in a new kicker...
I think Max can be good but we need someone who can we can trust to win us games. That’s not Max imo. Seems like a good kid but he never looks confident out there and the mental stuff is a big part of being a great kicker.

I came to UTK in '78. I remember an 18 was the standard for admittance back then. Nowadays, UTK admissions and leadership want really high GPAs and test scores, so they can publicly report how high they are for each incoming freshman class. It hurts great in-state kids who have to start elsewhere with hopes of transferring to UTK later. We have friends in-state whose kids were not admitted with 3.5 - 4.0 GPAs and high test scores.
Yep…..but kids are getting 4.5 and higher gpa’s
4.0 used to be, ugh, the highest.

3.5 was dang good.
Standardized testing today is either easier, graded differently, or a little of both.

I remember our guidance counselor said the state avg in TN in 1988 was about 16 and national avg was 17. Today it’s over 19…..close to 20.

I ran over my neighbors dog leaving my neighborhood to take the test and made only a 21. Class avg was 26. Our counselor said I had to take it again. It got me into every school that was recruiting me so I said nope.

There are lots of really bright kids out there, but let’s not pretend that the average hs kid is that much smarter than we were….not 2 full act points smarter than we were on avg. :)

I don't know man, these kids now have more to take in. When I was in school it was 6÷2 =3..

My granddaughter has to "show" her work, which takes a half of page but in the end the answer is 3..
