I’m not sure we’ll get a top DC from a top 10 program. What incentives would they have to sign up for the same position at UT? I think we’ll have to find an up and comer who is killing it at a lower tier school, or a former HC who is a defensive guy. Maybe a top defensive position coach at a top school who wants to be a dc would work. You also need someone who is willing to work with a high tempo offense that makes it more challenging to have a low scoring defense.

Guy has moved multiple times with Cignetti and appears to be very loyal to him. Doubt he leaves until its for a head coaching position. But I agree it would be an amazing option.

Well, sure, anything could happen but I can't see a single card TN could deal financially that OSU can't counter, and even less reason why they wouldn't do so.
At highest levels, I think it likely these guys are looking for $$$$ AND something else that attracts to the program.

Well he was the reason we wound up with Sunseri and a scheme change that even an mega offense couldn’t save lol.

Had he stayed, most of that defense are upperclassmen and Dools likely wins 10+ games.

TN is a stabilizing and rebuilding program after nearly two decades of being irrelevant. Top 5-10 coordinators want to work for Top 5-10 head coaches in Top 5-10 programs.
That simply isn't TN in this moment, but it might be. In the meantime, TN is what it is.

Would you think it’s possible for there to be a good sized pool of candidates that could succeed at top 1-15 programs, yet only those 1-15 programs exist? Meaning you could land a great hire capable of those metrics and not yet be 1-15?

Not entirely crazy to think there are 20 capable coaches but only 10 of those jobs? Right?

Sure, but I thought the conversation was centered on people already performing the job at the highest level, such as Patricia. A DC blue-blood.
I think we're more likely to wind up with a solid, promising guy who might be able to be that guy, rather than hire a finished product like Patricia.
