Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

SIAP but Brett McMurphy thinks we get Illinois in the Music CIty Bowl.

Seems like a winnable bowl and better than playing January 2nd in Charlotte.

Brett McMurphy believes Tennessee Football will be staying in state for its bowl game. The On3 college football insider on Saturday night updated his bowl projections, predicting the Vols to face Illinois in the Music City Bowl in Nashville.

The College Football Playoff field will be set on Sunday afternoon, followed by bowl announcements later in the day. The Music City Bowl will be played on December 30, with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN at Nissan Stadium.

McMurphy reported Illinois as confirmed to the Music City Bowl. He also reported Iowa in the ReliaQuest Bowl and Michigan in the Citrus Bowl as confirmed while projecting Iowa to face Vanderbilt in Jacksonville and Michigan to play Texas in Orlando.

Tennessee and Illinois have never met in football, but the Vols have made three appearances in the Music City Bowl. Tennessee lost to North Carolina 30-27 in the Music City Bowl in December 2010, beat Nebraska 38-25 in December 2016 and lost to Purdue 48-45 in December 2021 to cap the first season under head coach Josh Heupel.

Illinois went 8-4 during the regular season, losing 63-10 at Illinois, 34-16 at home against Ohio State, 42-25 at Washington and 27-10 at Wisconsin. The Illini beat Western Illinois, Duke, Western Michigan, USC, Purdue, Rutgers, Maryland and Northwestern.

JMO, but Ohio State should drop to 4. Indiana at 1, Georgia at 2, and Texas Tech at 3. Georgia and Texas Tech won their last games, Ohio State did not.

4-8 should be Oregon, Ole Miss, TAMU, and Oklahoma in some order.

9-12 should be Notre Dame, Miami, Tulane, and James Madison.

At 3 losses, Bama should justifiably be out. They have a bad loss to FSU and were blown out in the CG. If they get in, it's politics, not earned. The only teams that have a real argument over Miami are Vandy and possibly Utah, also both with just 2 losses. Again, this is all jmo, but 3 losses should put you out.

And, FTR, I think automatic qualifiers are stupid. Tulane and James Madison are only in because of it. They shouldn't be.

I also think the ACC should fix their conference. Stop with divisions and just have the two best teams play for the conference championship. It should have been Miami and UVA. Duke winning was fun, but they didn't deserve the spot to begin with IMO.

There are a lot of simple things that could be done to help fix the whole playoff mess, but politics prevent that from happening. Politics, IMO, are hurting the game.
The ACC removed divisions two years ago. Duke was playing in the title game because they went 6-2 in ACC play and won the tiebreaker over Miami. They lost three games out of conference - UConn, Tulane and Illinois.

DE – Mikail Kamara (Class of 2020 0-star, not ranked). Thought to be an undersized defensive lineman, Kamara had no Power 4 offers.

DT – Tyrique Tucker (Class of 2022 0-star, not ranked). Tucker joined has older brother at JMU. His other offers appeared to be FCS schools.

DT – Hosea Wheeler (Class of 2022 0-star, not ranked). Wheeler went to junior college out of high school.

DE – Kellan Wyatt (Class of 2022 3-star, No. 1,033 overall, No. 99 LB). Wyatt chose Maryland out of high school over Syracuse and Buffalo.

LB – Aiden Fisher (Class of 2022 0-star, not ranked). Fisher narrowed his options down to JMU and Old Dominion.

LB – Rolijah Hardy (Class of 2024 0-star, not ranked). The Florida product spent a year at Navy Prep before being discovered by the IU staff.

S – Amare Ferrell (Class of 2023 3-star, No. 578 overall, No. 53 safety). Ferrell was a solid win for then head coach Tom Allen. He had several Power 4 offers.

S – Louis Moore (Class of 2019 0-star, not ranked). Moore did not have offers out of high school and went the junior college route.

S – Devan Boykin (Class of 2020 3-star, No. 833 overall, No. 66 CB). Boykin committed to N.C. State out of high school. His other offers appear to have been non-Power 4.

Tough to punish a team for being good enough to make their conference championship game.

In the toughest conference.

When they were *in* the playoff before the CC game.

Not even disagreeing. But they’ve got to figure that out moving forward.

I don't believe Alabama gets left out for the reason you posted but if they do it will be the fact the ACC is saying Miami is right behind Alabama and we should have a representative in CFP....

CFP committee will put Bama in because of their win against UGA alone and qualify that as the best win amongst Bama, ND and Miami. JMO
Texas had a bad loss against Florida. Bama had a bad loss against Florida State, but they played a whole other game They didn't get to sit home like Ole Miss, Texas AM etc. Yes, I agree they were blown out, but I am thinking Texas AM (in particular) would have been blown out by Georgia too--probably even Ole Miss.

Okay, Luginbill...whatever you say.

Then the ACC should feel extremely embarrassed.

BYU was "in" before losing their conference championship. No one's arguing for them to be included, though they've only lost twice. Both times to the same team that's most likely getting a bye in the CFP. And they didn't lose to a horrible FSU team. There is no legitimate reason, other than football politics, for Bama to be in over Miami.

Geez, next I guess you're gonna tell me that coaching and development is important!
